“Amazing retreat in the Dominica's rainforest!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2014

It was an absolute delight to stay at Sam's and Tim's Carnival Cabin. We started as guests and left after five days of amazing Dominican discoveries as great friends! The cabin is part of the Mermaid's Secret, a lodge developed by Tim and Sam in the rainforest on the East coast. 3 other similar cabins are on the site, a gathering place to share a dinner, have a drink and chat and the pool in the river adjacent to their property. What made the experience unique is really Sam's and Tim's personality, friendly, down to earth, always willing to help and give advices to combine the best combination of visits and explorations. You can choose to have the breakfast and dinner there and Sam's cooking makes both experiences another delight, Tim's positive attitude and funny stories are part of spending memorable moments! The other guests were very pleasant to discuss with and play a giant Jenga the last evening. The lodge is in a rural, beautiful part of the island, with various villages and places to explore, the people we met were all so friendly. Ask Tim to recommend Natalie's restaurant, the food is delicious, authentic of Dominica and her banana, raisins ginger muffins freshly backed were the cherry on the cake of one of our day hiking around. I think you'll understand that we gathered fond memories of our stay and will come back without an hesitations. We highly recommend the whole experience!

Room Tip: Get in touch with Sam or Tim the owners.

In February 2014 , my wife and me spent 4 Nights in the Mermaids Secret in Dominica .
Getting there is a bit of a Challenge, though easy to find , the road down to the accomodation is rough and should only be used with an offroad vehicle.
Once there , we found very nice cabins , lovely arranged , and placed in the middle of Dominicas beautiful rainforest. The owners Tim and Sam , an english couple ,were absolutely friendly and very concerned of our well - being .
At that time, the grand Parents Doug and Kate were also there,
As well as Tims and Sams Son and a friend of the Family , Thomas. All of them were really lovely People. In the evenings , Sam and
Kate were cooking awesome British and International food. All , guest and Family , shared the Dinner at one Table .fabulous !
Though a bit remote , there are some possibilities to spend some Time there. Nice waterfalls are located near the Mermaids Secret . For a longer stay , i Would recommend to have an own Car !
In total , a brilliant place ! Must see this in Dominica !
Michael

After returning from Dominica, where we stayed at Mermaid's Secret for 5 nights, I checked the Tripadvisor reviews to see if everyone is as euphoric about this place as we are. Well, all I can say is that all the positive reviews are well deserved. So if you have just bought a flight ticket to Dominica and are considering where to stay, here is a summary of the reasons you should stay at Mermaid's Secret:
1. Location: Mermaid's Secret is located just before Rosalie, which makes it an excellent base for exploring the whole island. The port in Roseau and the Melville Hall airport are not too far away, while all the sights on the island can be reached in a day. I was a little worried, because we did not have our own transportation, but this is not a problem. You can either use the buses to get to Roseau and further afield, hitchhike, or book a trip at Mermaid’s Secret. There are also several nice hikes (some easier, some more difficult;) in the vicinity, for which you do not need a car at all.
2. Setting: The place is positioned next to the river, surrounded by the rainforest, which provides a serene backdrop for your vacation. The grounds are well kept and the bungalows/yurt are spread around, so you have your privacy. The river pool (Mermaid’s pool) is just a few steps away, giving you an opportunity to go swimming whenever you like without any hassle. We always kicked our day off with a swim in the river before breakfast, which was very invigorating.
3. Accommodation: You can either stay in a bungalow or a yurt. We stayed in a yurt, which we have never done before and would highly recommend it. You fall asleep by listening to the raindrops or the sounds of the jungle through the huge tent. The bathroom and the kitchen, well-kept and nicely furnished, are next to the yurt.
4. Food: We didn’t do any cooking ourselves, but had all the breakfasts/dinners at the Mermaid’s Secret. Sam, the owner, together with her mother Kate, had made delicious homemade dinners that we thoroughly enjoyed, not just because of the food but also because of the company. Even if you are a vegetarian (as me), don’t worry – they provide special meals for vegetarians as well.
5. Hosts: Last, but not least, the people that really made our trip, were the hosts – Sam, Tim and the rest of the Mermaid’s Secret crew. Our stay really felt like a “home away from home”. We finished off each day with a wonderful dinner, accompanied by swapping stories and getting advice from the Mermaid’s Secret family and other guests. It seems to me that Sam, Tim and their family have put their heart and soul into this place, and we were just happy to be part of it.

The secret of a jungle paradise is Mermaid's Secret on Dominica. The beautiful property situated in the Rosalie forest.
This is the best way to learn about Dominica that beautiful still unspoiled island in the Caribbean sea. They let us pitched the tent under the roof of a wooden deck because it was raining every day and night. The owners Tim and his wife Sam are trying to help you any way they can.
They are full of interesting information about the island and all of their family members make the stay on Mermaid's Secret very enjoyable. The property is situated by the river with the natural river pool, and equipped with hot shower. You can hike from there to other rivers, waterfalls and lakes in the rain forest or to the other parts of island.
They have a nice bar over the river where you can eat breakfasts and dinners, the food is delicious. The guests gather together here and Tim and Sam answer all their questions and explain things. They are really the soul of their beautiful property.

We had a great 4 day adventure at Mermaid's Secret. It exceeded our expectations and then some. Tim and Sam and crew are wonderful hosts. They had good advice for hikes and adventures, served up delicious dinners and breakfasts and make a wicked rum punch. The yurt was spacious, clean and the bed was very comfortable. A delight to look up and see the sky through the center of yurt . The kitchen/bath space was clean and well stocked for cooking. Good pots and pans and plenty of dishes. Mermaid's pool is refreshing much better than Emerald Pool by far! Prepare yourself for the road in from the main road it is quite exciting. But once you get to Mermaids Secret you will be glad you did. The grounds are well cared for and you ARE in paradise. The deck overlooking the river where meals/drinks are served is a vacation in and of itself.

Room Tip: the sun yurt is a beautiful space to relax sleep and enjoy the kitchen/bath that is attached with a...

Looking for a unique vacation with a comfortable place to relax, unique adventures and great hosts? This is the perfect place to go! Hidden in the jungle of Dominica, it is already an adventure to get there, but you'll be definitely rewarded. Surrounded by pure nature, our bungalow provided the perfect mix of a charming, unique place and the comfort of a top hotel. Our hosts Tim, Sam and the rest of the family were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home right away. They were so helpful to get the best out of our trip and took us on the most stunning tours. Sam's home-cooked meals were the perfect addition to our daily trips and having dinner with the family just felt like we were at a good friend's home. And of course, taking a dip in the own natural pool makes you forget the world easily - maybe that's the explanation for the name "Mermaid's Secret" at last. We wish Tim and Sam all the best! Thanks so much for the warm welcome, we are looking forward to our next stay ;)

My wife and I stayed in the Carib cabin for five nights at the end of December. Our time at Mermaid's Secret was the most fun we had in Dominica. It was such a relaxing and mellow place to be that we went on fewer day trips than we had planned. The porch of the cabin is a great place to hang out and watch and listen to the rainforest or read. Tim and Sam were very welcoming and accommodating hosts, happy to either help us make plans or just let us do our own thing. And we really enjoyed having dinner with them and relaxing on the deck of the bar over the river. This is a good option, as if you don't feel like cooking for yourself, there aren't many places to eat nearby (even if you do want to cook for yourself, for a decent grocery store you need to go into Roseau; if you want to drive a bit for dinner, Islet View restaurant in Castle Bruce is great). We really enjoyed walking out to Glasse Point, and the hike to Boiling Lake and subsequent visit to Screw's Suplhur Springs was the highlight of our trip to Dominica. The only (slight) downside we found at Mermaid's Secret was actually the neighboring resort (3 Rivers) - they often ran the generator (off at night, though), which sullied the peace a bit, but we couldn't hear it from the porch or the deck over the river. Also, really mind where you park (as others have written). You can park just about anywhere you like on this island, just NOT on their neighbour's road, as we found out (I'm still waiting for the cops that guy promised to send) :)
There's Wifi, however to get it in our cabin we had to do a bit of stretching on the porch (but if you come here, chances are you don't want to be reminded of the outside world, anyways). Oh, a clothes line on the porch would be great.
But really, we loved being here. Did I mention the coconuts Tim got us from his trees?
Also very nice: the drinks at the bar (which is really nice to share the day's adventures) are VERY reasonably priced.

Thanks Geordie for taking the time to post your review. We really do appreciate it. The clothes line is now in service (it was already on my to do list....which is very long!). Glad you enjoyed your stay. Our developement here will soon provide a larger parking area for our guests so the 'parking warden' can save his pleasant nature for others!
