“Great place for dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Great for a couples night out or family get together. They are very accommodating and willing to take reservations (on selected nights). Menu is restrictive but they have the best salad bar in town and their pea salad is to die for good.

“Time for an update!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

We tried this place with 7 other people. Upon pulling in I could tell the place was very aged but sometimes those are the best places. The service was very good but the food lacked. Yes they have a great salad bar but I'm coming for the steak. Maybe it was an off night but 1 out of 7 thought their steak was good. I don't think they season the steaks here. It was plain and over cooked for a medium. My only service grudge was that we were never asked if our steaks were cooked properly. Good thing because 5 out of the 7 would have gone back. The twice baked potato which I had high hopes for was extremely salty and way over seasoned. The fresh bread on the table was nice but it would be nice to have plates to put it on and maybe butter knives as well. Instead your forced to make a crumb mess all over their linen table covers and spread butter with a steak knife. Overall the place is in need of a severe update. Its very aged inside and out. This is one of those places that the owners are just milking it for all its worth and not putting anything back into there investment. Like I said maybe it was an off night for this place but we certainly will never come back....

“The Smell was Overpowering!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

JMJ Arrived in Champaign and outside the hotel in the parking lot was this delicious aroma! I wanted to eat there and no where else. It was the Ribeye Restaurant in Champaign at 1701 S. Neil. They claim to be the GREAT ONE STEAK PLACE and they are correct. The menu is very limited so you really should be looking for their steak ( they do have chicken and shrimp). The Salad Bar has an amazing selection and some of the salads are older traditional salads you don't see as often now (Beets, kidney beans, waldorf, etc..) The service was excellent and our waitress kept one of our steaks warm while someone had to go to the car. She anticipated the problem and dealt with it quickly and cheerfully. Our steaks were cooked as ordered and we really enjoyed out meal. They do have some specials on certain nights so remember to ask your staff. Enjoy!!!

“Always the same good food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2012

This place is an institution. The interior hasn't changed or been updated in like forever, but who cares? You go there for the food.

The Ribeyes come in 8oz and you can add ounces to them. They are wonderfully seasoned and prepared well and served on a sizzling skillet. The twice baked potatoes are worth a trip themselves, as is the Salad Bar.

“Good but not Great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2012

Having been to The Ribeye in the past, I expected a fine dining experience. I knew what to expect, price wise, a bit on the high side but not extravagant. The Ribeye's specialty, of course, is the ribeye steak. It is sold between 8oz-32oz sizes, with the cost going up accordingly. It offers a Salad bar, fresh baked bread, and potato choice with the cost of the meal, in most cases.

The decor is dated and some remodeling is recommended. The black painted, false ceiling tile is sagging in places. The walls are adorned with pictures of Illinois athletic players of the past, with "Illini" lamp shades over some of the tables. Being that the University of Illinois is nearby, it is understandable. The tables are nicely set with cloth napkins and decent silverware.

The Salad bar offers a variety of pre-made salad dishes and the ingredients for a lettuce salad. It is unremarkable, but most choices are fresh and tasty. The steaks we ordered, both ribeyes, were both perfectly cooked to our specifications. The meat was tender and juicy, but not exceptionally flavorful, which would have scored an excellent had it been.

The highlight of our visit was the wait staff. Our waitress was very friendly, helpful and never let our drinks go below half gone. She checked that our meals were cooked per our request and that we had everything we needed. A bright star during our visit.

Overall The Ribeye is a pleasant dining experience to have occasionally. The meal is a bit on the higher side but the whole experience is better then a chain steakhouse. A good place for a date night or after the game.
