“Stunning location, helpful staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2014 via mobile

We stayed 2 nights, and arranged a morning safari.
We had the 6000 rupee jeep, which was the most comfortable. When we arrived at the NP we also got a spotter / guide, which we didn't pay for (but if they do a good job it is customary to give a tip). I can only presume the guides go with the "more expensive" jeeps as you are more likely to tip! I don't know if this is the case, but the same thing happened to us at Yala!
The guide took us to an area where there were no other jeeps, and we were surrounded and very close to approx 20 elephants, which was amazing. We were by ourselves for approx 30 mins, when 1 more jeep arrived. It was an unforgettable experience. We also saw numerous other animals, but there really are hundreds of elephants and they are very easy to see.
The camping is really quite luxurious. Comfortable beds, en-suite bathroom, (cold shower -but it's not a problem) even a room service buzzer for you to order food & drinks from your tent.
I would recommend eating from the a la carte menu, the rice and curry was good, as was the mixed noodles. We did not eat the BBQ, as we had seen bad reports, and we don't eat meat... So no point in eating BBQ.
Along with the safari, the high point was spending time down on the river bank, watching and interacting with the village people and children that live on the other side of the river. The women doing their washing, the children's "bath time" - all in the river!
They were constantly waving and saying "hello", the children posing for photos! It was magical.
The staff were all very helpful and attentive. We loved it.

We stayed two nights at River camping. The area is beautiful-situated right next to river. Location is so peaceful and the tents are luxurious. We paid for the breakfast, dinner and safari package. The safari trip was amazing with a driver that doubled as a guide. We saw lots of elephants. Only negative aspect is the food which to be honest wasn't great- over cooked, tasteless and repetitive. If you can pick an al a carte option I would probably recommend that as had lunch from it and was nice food.

If you need a base of a safari location & don't fancy a hotel or the other luxury camping options are off budget this could be for you. If you are not taking safari there is nothing else to do here and not walking distance to anything; so plan your visit carefully. Avoid the offer of the BBQ, it expensive & terrible. The al a carte menu is perfectly fine. Alcohol is also very expensive here so don't splash out because your trapped.

The staff are attentive (almost too much so) but did remove a giant hand size spider from the bathroom.

They can organise safari on arrival if you get there before 2.30pm for that afternoon, returning at 6.30pm. You can then either leave first thing or get another safari in before breakfast. Either way with a busy trip that should be enough.

Otherwise tents are great (apart from the expected bugs). bring cash for safari (its cash only!) and your food / drinks, although you do have the option to pay for these on card at their restaurant in town. wifi is chargeable which became quite irritating.

The stay was relaxing since the staff was nice and the place has it's natural charm.
Location described in Agoda and give by google maps is not correct and both Agoda and hotel staff are aware of it, since I made the question! What makes your arrival to the location disappointing, since you were expecting to be near the lake!!!! this is not pleasant.
Staff is nice but service is poor and need improvements to understand the guests needs.Dinner experience near the river is nice but food cooking (BBQ) is poor too: not much choice. Since was my husband birthday I ask to have a cake that was charged plus services at the end of the stay as if was a wedding cake with lot of glamour that was not there! Besides instead of surprise since the beginning of the dinner staff was insisting to bring it before the meal....Besides it was from far the place where I was charged incredible amount for the drinks (not even in the 5* resorts I was before in Sri Lanka).
Another thing to point is, since I was not able to cancel a 2nd room that was booked, I informed the staff that my driver was overnight in that available room. Since the price payed for both rooms was the same I was expecting to see the same service....I noted that staff did not behave accordingly.

After a long trip from Nuwara Eliya we were happy to find this place hidden in the city of Udawalawe. At first we didn't know where we were going but once we reached the campsite we knew we made the right choice. You go to the athgira restaurant and from there you are brought to the campsite. About 2 km away or so. We payed 80 dollars for half-board. So dinner and breakfast. Dinner was a BBQ with soup, salad and a BBQ full of all kinds of meat and fish, also tomato and pineapple. There was also rice and pasta so good choices available for everyone. Breakfast was also really good with many choices! We would definitely stayed longer if our budget allowed it. However I do want to point out that it was an excellent price quality ratio! Safari was also very good with a good driver. We took the fancier truck out into the park for 5000 Rs.

Me and my brother stayed here for a night at the end of August. The site itself is situated right on the river and has many large tents facing the river. The tents are very spacious, the beds are very large and comfortable. The bathroom was very good and had a good shower. The dinner we had here was a BBQ buffet style meal, this was the only slight thing that let the whole place down, it was fairly average. The staff were very helpful and friendly and helped arrange a safari for the following morning, which was superb. Breakfast was also excellent, as you eat right by the river front. This place is slightly more expensive than some of the other places we stayed but it was well worth it as you get what you pay for, plus it is fairly unique! I would recommend to anyone looking for a place near Uda Walawe National Park.

Very nice setting in a spacious private tent with all the ammenities needed. Comfortable bed with mozzienet, clean bathroom, nice private veranda overlooking the river. The food was fantastic and the staff went out of their way to create a special atmosphere with the BBQ, the bonfire and the candles. Breakfast in the morning was served next to the river.
I had a fantastic stay and recommend anyone travelling to Udawalawe to stay in Athgira River Camping.

Thanks again for your hospitality,
