“Excellence all the way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

We stayed one night at the White Hart on a special deal which turned out to be excellent value for money. Our check in was fast and efficient, our room was lovely and in keeping with the character of our surroundings with its lovely open beams. The room was spotlessly clean and the shower room whilst small was well appointed.
Our six course dinner was truly memorable each course was excellent and the beef was to die for. The staff were very knowledgable about each course and the service was faultless.
The bed was comfortable and we slept well, breakfast was excellent and all in all we couldn't fault anything we would happily recommend and we will be back.

We stayed on a special deal overnight which included dinner, bed and breakfast (and a glass of champagne). The hotel is an amazingly old and historic building in a pretty part of north Essex. We were welcomed well by friendly staff. Dinner was excellent - a goumet meal which was beautifully cooked and presented (and waiter James and assistant were knowledgable about the food they were serving).

The rooms are not in the main building and are just adequate and a bit shabby. Very small shower room with toilet and tiny handbasin. OK for one night only. Unfortunately breakfast was disappointing in quality after such a lovely dinner. Poor selection and DIY tea or coffee.

Would certainly recommend the restaurant for dinner (although would not want to pay the full high prices). The special meal was the highlight of the visit.

We had an excellent stopover at this hotel on Tuesday night. The 5 course dinner was fantastic -
we especially enjoyed the scallops & goats cheese starters and the creme brulee with rhubarb desert.
The service was very friendly. We''ll be back soon.

One night was enough. It was a small family wedding, an opportunity to see my brother from France and father of 95.
On the plus side we were able to check in early after a six hour drive, room was a reasonable size.
Downside points - no soap in the bathroom, cobwebs and no working tv.
The meal was actually very good using fresh vegetable. It was a pity the quality of the breakfast was not the same. The breakfast was portioned well but the sausages and eggs left much to be desired.

The most annoying aspect of the stay was when my brother and I wanted to have a quiet drink in the bar away from the noise in the barn, after all we are in our 60's!
The plump girl in the bar had a panic attack when she realised we did not wish to remain in the barn and dashed off to get her manager.
Within minutes James appeared with his spikey hair and did his best to blame the owner for his John Clesse peculiar instructions.

We were very offended by his attitude and his inability to make a decision of his own.

I would advise against staying here!

Room was clean enough but not for the squeamish if you don't like cobwebs ! The bathroom sink is described as a "handbasin" and unfortunately that's all it's big enough to wash in , mind you , with no soap either, probably not a problem.
Internet and TV advertised but neither worked .Apparently the storm .....oh yeah ! Internet signal can't reach the rooms anyway according to the rude little manager with spiky hair .
Staff were initially very pleasant but I then ended up having a row over why I could not have a drink in the Bar during a wedding reception I was attending . The disco in the Barn was great(if you don't want to talk) but I wanted a chat with family I hadn't seen for some time and in spite of being Resident that night , was refused service in the Bar . Never come across such rude and indifferent staff and was a first for me in being refused service .I wonder if it's legal to refuse to serve a Resident ? Even the owner has failed to respond to an email I sent him so presumably he couldn't care less either .
Breakfast was on a par with a motorway service cafe . Poor ! At least it was relatively easy to count the 18 baked beans on the plate !
The building itself is great and very old but that's all this place has got going for it .Definitely not somewhere I'll be going back to or spending my money there .

Room Tip: Take a feather duster for the cobwebs and some soap

We found this hotel/restaurant through a special offering and gave it a go. We were warmly welcomed with a free drink upon arrival. They let us take our room early. Dinner came with the package we purchased and it was incredible!! 6 courses.....a 3 course meal with 3 "mini" pallet cleansers or teasers in-between each course. Our host, James was so attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. At breakfast the next morning we chatted with other guests and they were raving about their dining experience as well! We will go back for sure!!

Room Tip: We stayed in a downstairs room with front windows, not far from the road. It was very hot and we had...

The food was outstanding and the restaurant staff although young were very attentive.
Everyone made us feel welcome.
Nothing was too much trouble and they even gave us a tour of the "wedding barn",
Really old fashioned and the White Hart goes back many years. The warm fire was welcoming and the padded beams made us laugh with the sloping flour we are sure many a person had banged their head on the old beams.
Great location, great staff and we would definatly recommend.
