My husband and I recently returned from a lovely week in Great Guana Cay, where we rented a house and spent the week reading, relaxing, eating too much and snorkeling! The island is tiny, and although we had no need of a golf cart given the excellent location of our house, we chose to rent one anyway to have the added flexibility. There is a fairly well stocked grocery store in Guana (we had not had time to shop in Marsh Harbour before our ferry, and only wanted breakfast food and snacks), as well as a liquor/souvenir shop. This is not the island for those seeking excitement, nightlife and loads of restaurants. We ate only at Nippers (good food, great music and spectacular view of the beach), Grabbers (good food, fabulous sunsets and laid back, friendly atmosphere), as well as one awesome lunch at Island Flavours, which unfortunately was only open on weekends (we were there in August) and we didn't get the opportunity to go back.
The locals and tourists alike were very friendly, and it was impossible to go for a walk without being offered a ride on the back of a golf cart to wherever we were going. We snorkelled on the Atlantic side, the Sea of Abaco and on an organized snorkel trip with Dive Guana. While the snorkeling was not as amazing as we had hoped to find, we were impressed with the health of the reef, some of the beautiful coral (particularly fan coral), and we did see some large-ish fish as well as our first ever nurse sharks, which was exciting for us. The beach on the Atlantic side (by Nippers) is truly one of the most spectacular beaches we have seen, and one can walk forever along the most beautiful white sand. It is possible to snorkel from the shore almost anywhere along that beach. Definitely a nice place to visit.
