Staying at the Sun Valley resort is like staying in an old historical mansion with all the conveniences of a modern hotel. The resort is a part of Idaho history, with pictures of the Kennedys on their slopes to medals from U.S. Olympic skiers from the area.

What makes the resort special is the universally friendly, genuine demeanor of all the staff. Not a single frown or hint of frustration. I know it is impossible that all the staff loved their jobs that much, but that was the impression we got – on a holiday weekend, no less!

My husband and I stayed there with our 5 month old daughter (we brought our pack and play for her to sleep in). We stayed in a lodge standard king and found there was more than enough room to put all of our stuff. The only minor complaints we would have about the room was that you could hear everything going on around you (expected in an older hotel) and that the fridge kept our beverages only cool (not cold). We ended up using our ice chest to keep our beer cold. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom fixtures are a little dated, but not to the point where I’d stay elsewhere.

The food was excellent – much better than we even expected. The Ram was fantastic – veal and lamb cooked just perfectly. Larry the piano player was extremely sociable and kept playing all our old jazz standard favorites. The music lulled our daughter to sleep in her car seat while we enjoyed our longest most relaxed dinners in a long time. Gretchens was excellent for lunch and has the best club sandwich I’ve ever tasted. We ate outside next to the ice rink with Sasha Cohen eating several tables down (she was in town for a skating show). Bald Mountain Pizza was also good for a gourmet pizza to-go.

Note: we paid $200/night on hotels.com

Room Tip: Book on hotels.com for a great rate or else book through sunvalley.com with one of their promotions.

The charmed history of the Sun Valley Lodge and resort is displayed througout the hotel. Comfortable beds (but small bathrooms). Relaxing environment. Friendly bellmen. Dining outside by the ice skating rink is extra special experience.Dinner at the Trail Creek Cabin shouldn't be missed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the ice rink.

I loved all the amenities this resort offers! If you stay here, they are always willing to drive you somewhere or pick you up with there shuttle service. There is also a free local bus service that was very easy to use. Very accommodating! I won a trip there from my company, and extended the trip on my own dime. I went trap shooting at their gun club, rented bicycles from Pete's right next door for an awesome leisurely bike ride around town, and ate at the outdoor restaurant that looks onto the ice skating rink - i think it was called Gretchen's. I enjoyed it all and had a great time enjoying the views!

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before checking in, just to make sure you get what you want.

There isn't a whole lot of hotels to choose from in Sun Valley. The lodge is located about a mile outside of Ketchum and maybe another mile outside of the base of the mountain.
The lodge offers first class service, valet's outside to park your car or run and open the door as you approach.
It is a bit outdated as you are still handed a metal room key and the bathrooms could use a makeover.
The hallways are draped in old black and white skiing pics taken around sun valley. There are giant breakout rooms with grand piano's and vast fireplaces. An ice rink takes up the back of the lodge and makes for great people watching if you don't wanna lace up your skates.
Overall it is a nice place to stay, especially since most of your time in Sun Valley should be spent away from the hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights and 3 days before heading off to a whitewater rafting trip. During our stay, we ice skated on the hotel's outdoor rink (in 80 degreee weather!), rode to the top of the ski mountain to eat at the Roundhouse, learned to shoot hunting rifles, went paragliding at 9000 feet, went biking, hiking, relaxed and swam at the beautiful outdoor pool, listened to an outdoor concert and ate fabulous food. The grounds, dining options and room were perfect. The staff is very helpful and always attentive. We would absolutely stay again.

This is a beautiful hotel with such history. How many places can you go that you can sit outside and eat dinner while watching folks on an outdoor ice rink?
The rooms are comfortable, beds are very comfortable, clean but could use updated bath rooms. The fixtures reminded me of my childhood and the bathrom is very small.
But this resort picks you up at the airport, has some lovely facilities, GREAT golf course, and nice shopping onsite. If you get a chance, walk or take the shuttle to the town of Sun Valley.
I will say the food could also use some improvement. I didn't have a "great" meak while I was there, but the place is so fun, the air so clear, and the area so beautiful, that I do plan to go back.
