We stopped at Manhattan Cafe on our way through Idaho. We were met by a friendly young lady who looked in charge of the diner. We had a club sandwich with fries. the fries were exceptional. The cafe has historical pictures of Shonshone on the wall and we learned it was a hardy railroad town in its day. President Taft made a railway stop there when he was campaigning back in the day. a nice place to stop. It is old however and very much a small town diner.

If you are hungry for a no nonsense cafe style meal, this is the stop if you have the time. Breakfast is always the best. It is about as homemade as you can get away from home! Friendly service with an honest smile. Try a milkshake to go!

I worked at this restaurant years ago when Bill & Sumi Hata owned it, the food was excellent. The Wyants have owned this now for many years & the food is still pretty good, the restaurant's appearance is much nicer inside than it was back in the day. So Hubby & I had to make an emergency trip from Montana to Idaho & it was my idea to stop in at the Manhattan Cafe one afternoon for lunch. I ordered a patty melt, kinda yukky, the meat was thin & tough, the onions were under cooked, the bread was over toasted & I ordered some mozzerella sticks, I only got 4 for $ 2.49 or something like that. Same goes for the jalapeno poppers, I only got 4 for the same price. Hubby ordered the grilled chicken sand. which was very dry & not much flavor. The fries were good though. Not sure if the cook was having a bad day or what, but we were both pretty disappointed with our lunch, & with the cost of the poppers & mozzerella sticks, since an order includes only 4. I don't think the menu indicates the amount of poppers or mozz. sticks you get for that price. Overall, its a nice place to eat & its worth stopping in if your in Shoshone.

Shoshone isn’t the most happening place in Idaho. We stopped there to buy groceries for a picnic, but not having much luck finding a supermarket, we decided to look for a restaurant instead. Most places seemed to be closed – some permanently – but then we came across the Manhattan Café, opposite the railway station (closed). It’s a no-nonsense diner serving no-nonsense food. The daily buffet lunch had been and gone by the time we arrived, so we ordered lunch-counter staples: burger, chicken and fries. The meals were ample, piping hot and served with a smile. Can you ask for more?

September 2009, After visiting the nearby Shoshone Indian Ice Caves, afterwords we had lunch at the Manhattan Cafe in Shoshone. Pronounced "show shown". Service was very good in this diner. Food was typical American diner food. Not great but not bad. We enjoyed our meals. The menu features 1lb hamburger sand! Reportedly Papa Ernest Hemingway who lived in nearby Ketchum, use to frequent this establishment when we went on his fishing trips to nearby Silver Creek. If you're looking for reasonably priced cafe/diner food, then we can recommend this historic dining establishment in Shoshone, Idaho.
