“Restored and Released from Captivity”
Reviewed September 3, 2010

Staying at Shore Lodge was a satisfying experience in more than one way. My grandfather built a cabin in McCall in 1945, and like many McCall families, I grew up visiting Shore Lodge for breakfast on the patio. Several years ago when Shore Lodge went up for sale, a San Diego millionaire aggressively outbid local folks for purchase. After an extensive remodel, he privatized the hotel for time. Eventually he opened it to the general public under a different name, charging exorbitant rates designed to attract his wealthy jet-setting Southern California friends. McCall folks were no longer welcome to the place they’d considered the town’s heart and living room.

Two years ago local businessmen regained control of the hotel and returned it to its original name of Shore Lodge. They lowered the rates to more affordable levels. And they let the locals know they were welcome back with open arms and open doors. This was the cause of much rejoicing for the people of McCall.

This summer my family is doing some remodel work on our little cabin and we decided to stay at Shore Lodge for a few days during the process. The lodge is simply lovely, like a kidnapped loved-one who returned even more beautiful despite her years of captivity. Here’s my run-down:

FOOD: Delicious, innovative without being stuffy, good service. Keep that chef! We appreciated the extra touches, like the basket of yummy scones served for everyone before their breakfast entrée arrived.

SERVICE: Friendly, helpful, went out of their way to accommodate us. I didn’t expect near-Four Season levels of service in McCall! My only nit-pick was the unfriendly printed notice that late check-outs would be charged $100 per hour (!), but they were open to pre-arranged late-check-outs.

ROOM: Spotless, high-end décor, though slightly dated from the millionaire-makeover days (brass fixtures, no flat-screen TVs, etc.) I didn’t mind the slightly older styles EXCEPT for the bizarre English hunting themed paintings in our room and around the hotel. (Easy to fix—take ‘em down, please!) Our room also lacked a clock and extra plug-ins.

AMENITIES: Above and beyond. The heated pool, hot tub and sauna were perfect. The large fitness center had everything I could hope for. We reserved the small theatre and watched a movie we brought for our kids, though they maintain a good list of DVDs. The staff even brought us popcorn and beverages—all free! Our only problem was that the sound was somewhat muted and soft; they said there are rooms above the theatre so they have to keep the volume down. Still, the experience was delightful.

RESERVATIONS: We deliberately reserved our small, street-side room during some very quiet days at the lodge, hoping that we might garner a free upgrade. No such luck—they’d already had our room number written in ink before our arrival. I think we were the only guests staying in our hallway but they still gave us the least expensive room. I know I shouldn’t expect such an upgrade, but most places would have offered this to us. Not earth-shattering, but a mild disappointment nonetheless.

OVERALL: I would stay again in a heartbeat. A joy on its own and a special joy to my heart—we’ve got our beloved Shore Lodge back! We may just have to do another remodel on our McCall cabin to find another excuse to stay at Shore Lodge again.

Customer service extremely poor, they lost my reservation and took 6 weeks to offer me my 3rd night that I originally reserved. Claims to be nonsmoking, yet guests smoke outside rooms and smoke drifts up into other guests rooms. Brought this to desk supervisor attn: he chastised me and allowed other customer to ridicule me for saying something. Will never go back here, they have no clue when it comes to customer service!

We stayed at the Shore Lodge for one night, and wish we would have had time for a longer stay. Our room had a living room, a luxurious bath, a huge bedroom with a vaulted ceiling, and a balcony with two comfy chairs overlooking the lake. The setting is amazing. There are docks that have adirondack chairs and rockers for sitting right on the lake. It's idyllic and I didn't want to leave. There's a pool, beach, lake trampoline... We saw many families with a ground floor room where they could virtually have their kids playing in the lake a few feet away. There's a movie room where they'll even pop you some popcorn. Tennis courts... The dining room view (and the view from the bar) is almost surreal with huge picture windows. Try the fried asparagus as an appetizer. This is a classy hotel and yet it's oddly cozy too.

We called months in advance and booked 2 nights at Shore Lodge for our honeymoon. When we checked in and saw our room I burst into tears. It was, as my husband described it, the size of a closet, barley bigger than the bed itself, tiny bathroom with a stand-up shower, and not even a mini fridge. We confronted the hotel, reminding them that this was our HONEYMOON. They offered to switch us to "the only other room available", so we took it. At a rate of $249.99 a night, the room was beautiful, 3 times the size, facing the lake. But by the time we moved our luggage in it was nearly 8pm and the sun was setting. We woke the morning to rain and cloudy skies, and our only plans for the day had been to relax on the beach. We decided to check out early and drive down to Boise, where the weather forecast was sunny. We checked out an hour before check-out deadline, at which point we were informed we would be charged for a second night since we had reserved it. We understood that this was the hotels policy, but were absolutely appalled that they expected to charge us $600 for our stay. My husband pointed out that the rate of the room that we had originally reserved was only $139. We ended up paying $430 for the one night we stayed and for our early departure. When our friends ask us how our honeymoon was, we moan and tell them not to even ask............

Stayed at Shore Lodge for a wedding over Memorial Day. Absolutely wonderful resort. We had rainy weather so we didn't get to enjoy the beach or the outdoor amenities but we can only imagine how fun it would be in the peak season. Our room was THE BEST! Huge bathroom with soaking tub and separate shower, exquisite finishes, great toiletries and amazing plush terry & fleece towels. Truly relaxing. The room had a nice sitting room with credenza (coffee, mini fridge and safe inside) and two comfy armchairs. Bedroom was such a nice surprise. 14 foot ceilings, amazing lake & mountain view, super comfortable king bed, iPod docking station, turndown service with fresh chocolate chip cookies. Found out that our room, which we paid $150 night, would jump to nearly $400/night after Memorial Day. Go in the off-season and save! Would definitely stay here again!!

For this visit we would rate the Shore Lodge a 3 1/2 ( if that were available) since there were too many shortcomings to be a 4. With a spectacular location on the lake's edge, Shore Lodge is clearly one of the premier properties in McCall. The public areas are elegantly rustic while the rooms are elegantly 19th century East coast / English ( what is that about?). The room and bath were large and well, if oddly, appointed. The linens and towels were of good quality, with a refer and average coffee service. The complementary WIFI worked well. We had a very good breakfast ( food and service) in the Lake Grill, but missed dinner and drinks in the main dining room and lounge due to an unexpectedly long drive in ( washed out roads in Oregon). The lodge has all the public ammenities one would expect in a higher end conference and vacation lodge. The list of improvements needed is too long for a lodge of this caliber: We arrived about 9:00 PM to find the place packed with people enjoying the beautiful lounge and two restaurants- there is no registration parking and the parking lot was filled with diner's cars, so we parked and schelpped our luggage in from the far corner of the parking lot. Check in and check out was average at best, less than average for a lodge that seeks this level of clientele. This is a three story lodge with no elevator- not sure how they get around ADA requirements. We stayed on the ground floor- the only floor with no ice machine. The adjoining room guest's conversations and TV leaked through the walls. The bath had average toiletries and no shower gel. The TV worked well but had a very modest channel selection. This is a beautifully situated lodge that should be better than our experience. The lodge is expensive but would have been rated a very good value if we had a better overall experience. Taxes and a 'resort fee' add almost 20% to the rate. Beautiful location and property that could be a very good to excellent stay with improvements.

I planned a business conference at Shore lodge in late 2009. They were fantastic to work with. They did an incredible job. They were creative and imaginative when it came to helping plan menus and outdoor activities. They really worked hard to make sure all the little details were taken care of, catering was great and the staff really helped to make sure all the meetings ran smoothly. (Cindy was fantastic.) I would highly recommend this lodge for business or pleasure. The views are breathtaking, the rooms are spacious, and it’s just an absolutely beautiful place. (I had the most amazing facial – so make sure and take time to visit the spa as well!)
