Owner description: Located just 1.5 miles from downtown McCall, Ponderosa State Park is a year round destination park. Covering a thousand-acre peninsula that juts into Payette Lake, this picturesque state park offers guided walks with naturalists, campfire programs and camping facilities. During winter months the park has groomed Nordic Ski trails and snowshoe trals.

For a small little state park, Ponderosa is beautiful. We walked 3 miles on the trails this morning and absolutely loved it. Running and biking trails. Very easily accessible. Wish they had a multi-day pass rather than just $5 entrance daily, but it's only $5 for vehicle entrance, not walkers or bikers.

We came into the Park to see if we could find some hiking trails that would run into some beaches. Maps online and the map provided by the attendant were not descriptive or accurate. We started on a foot trail, which was easy to find, but after about ten minutes it ended in a fence with a road on the other side of it. We followed the road for a ways, and found a new trail. We worked our way toward the lake and enjoyed our time at a beach at an abandoned summer camp. We then made our way through a camping ground back to our car. The overall experience was good, but the area is a bit disjointed.

Bike, walk or DRIVE up to the lookout for the great view... and drive down to the many little picnic areas on the lake for a nice .. in the woods away from everyone feel. $5 per car to get in .. totally worth it. Limited boat trailer parking on 7/4 weekend so keep that in mind when bringing a boat to the ramp at that time of year.

Visited PSP yesterday for the first time to get away from the heat. There was hardly anyone there and those we can accross were mostly nice families. The road leading to the distal peninsula was blocked/closed so that was a little disappointing. There were several sections of sandy beaches for the kids to play and numerous hiking/biking trails. No paved surfaces. The facilities were nice and clean but not all of the restrooms were open yet as the season hadn't officially begun. Very windy by the water.

I visit McCall two times a year and I would never miss a visit to this beautiful park. Hiking, biking, birdwatching, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great ways to enjoy this area. Highly suggested.
