It depends who you are and what you are looking for. If you are a hunter, or want something one up from camping this is for you. We arrived at the Sourdough Lodge from Stanley where most of the lodghing appeared to be running down for the season. It was also very smokey due to the fires in the mountains to the east. When we arrived at the Sourdough it was the end of the afternoon following a long drive and we did not want to go any further. In other circumstances we would have found the small motel room (there are bigger much more expensive units) too basic and rudimentary for our needs. There was a bed and cramped wash/shower area and a loo with childsize seat. There were no chairs. The manager told us to grab two from the veranda, which we did, and cleaned them, but there was hardly room to walk around as a result. The furniture is best described as rustic made from tree branches. The light had an annoying hum and the TV had a limited number of channels which were not designed for our needs. The room was clean and smelt strongly of disinfectant which was rather offputting. There was no bedhead and the bedding comprised a blanket and old bedspread. The towels were good, and there was a nice carpet on the floor but don't expect tissues, shampoo, shower caps or other little extras. The place gave the appearance of being designed by a man for a man. We thought the price, without b/fast to be high, but this is the penalty when advantage can be taken for lodgings in out of the way places , and where the road may be blocked by snow, and thus revenue reduced for a portion of the year. It was better than sleeping in the car. There is a cafe on the site owned by the Lodge where and evening meal and b/fast can be purchased. If this sort of accommodation is what you are looking for, or, alternatively if you want something extra, plan your journey accordingly because driving over this wonderful country can take longer than you think, and out of season can be a problem finding lodging just where you might wish it to be.
