We stayed at the Aura Soma Lava on June 16, 2007. We reserved the Chalet, then were asked to move to the Cottage. The Cottage was fine, and had its own hot tub and was very close to the river. Upstairs there was a queen room, a room with a daybed, a bathroom and a kitchen. In the basement there was a queen room, a washer/dryer and a bath. The place is not in tip top shape, but still retains a relaxed charm. We tubed down the river -- you can rent intertubes up and down the main street for $3 a hour -- but be careful where you put in because the rapids can be very, very rough upstream. The restaurant choices were no so great, I would bring my own food next time. There is a very small grocery store if you get desperate. In any case, all in all we liked the little town and enjoyed our stay at the Aura Soma Lava.

We stayed in the cottage for 3 days, after our girls only 2007 road trip from Seattle to Montana then to Lava Hot Springs. We did our grocery shopping in Pocatello 35 miles away, and relaxed in the private hot spring water hot tub, sat on the porch and just relaxed.
The main office has great organtic coffee made to order, to tell you the truth they let us make it, being picky Seattle java nuts! The staff was wonderful, making great conversation and they left us alone to relax!
In addition they have student massage students come in from the college in Pocatello. We received a wonderful one and a half hour massage for practically nothing at the public hot springs massage facilities. The staff at Aura Soma Lava arranged everything.
The only drawback to Lava Hot Springs is it is very small and there is nothing around if you need to get out you have to drive to Pocatello.
But we went to relax and that is what we did, we will return to do it again. A great stop for a girls roadtrip!

My trip to Lava Hot Springs was only three days and two nights to relax after a hectic year-end work schedule. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The accommodations were clean, warm and pleasant.

The coffee shop/office was delightful. Probably the most enjoyable time I had here was the time spent in the coffee shop talking with the owners and other travellers. Everything from exotic coffee to hot chocolate. Being Christmas weekend, our host also made a special breakfast for all of us.

The hot pool onsite was larger than I expected. Sufficiently large to have over 10 people and yet not feel crowded. The water was perfect. By the way, Lava Hotsprings produce a crystal clear odorless water. I found it very healing to soak in.

This place really let us down. I don't know if our expectations were out of sort or if was just that bad, but we were wishing we could leave very shortly after we arrived at the Oregon Trail. The room was dark and damp with a window a/c that just kept on groaning to cool the room all day and night. One window facing the street was not sufficent to cause a breeze, so there was no other choice besides air conditioning. Being close to the road was not a problem, as the town is pretty small and not so much traffic as to cause a noise problem. We did enjoy sitting on the deck and watching the rafters walking up the hill for the next run down.

The bathroom was an assembly of inconvenience. No place to set anything down was the first and most inconvenient issue. The room was carpeted, contributing to the dampness of the entire suite and the steps to the elevated tub made the whole process of taking a shower a bit acrobatic. Added to the experience was the lack of a wall mounted shower head, leaving the bather dependent on either their partner for holding the hand held wand, or attempting to wash and rinse alternately.

When our room was not serviced on day two, the proprietor announced they only did so on request.

While decorated interestingly, it is always noticeable when a hotel room is constructed with residential rather than commercial grade materials. We felt a bit like we were staying with a poor cousin.

The highlight of our trip was getting out of the room and enjoying the wonderful Thai restaurant up the hill. Also, a walk to the laundromat takes one past the window of a funny little growling dog that snarls at each passerby.

We won't go back to Lava Hot Springs, and the Oregon Trail Motel would be our last choice should we unexpectedly find our selves stranded there.

As mentioned, it's all about expectations - so read the many nice reviews of this town and lodging as you decide where to stay.

I sincerely regret our customer's experience. We are redecorating the room, adding a larger window in the bathroom, and will do our best to correct all the suggestions given. I have phoned jleeo today thanking him for the review and suggestions, requesting he give us another opportunity to give him first class treatment.

Right on Main Street, the Oregon Trail Inn is part of the Aura Soma Lava complex. Since we were only staying one night and there were only two of us, we stayed here. It was great! Clean, quiet, lots of extra towels, and a little patio that overlooked the quaint Main Street.
