“River Dance Lodge-Fabulous Vacation!!!”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

My Daughter and I drove from California to Kooskia to experience the River Dance Lodge and were very happy we did! Our Service was amazing! The staff treated us like family. Many thanks to Sienna, Terra, Brice, Ellen, Mikel, John, Jeff & Krista for making our adventure so wonderful. Our cabin was rustic and charming. (and clean) Loved the hot tub on the porch. My daughter enjoyed having the loft to herself. The Food was Amazing!! Never did I dream that in the middle of Highway 12 I would have this wonderful food. The vacation package is a great value, especially when it is your first time rafting on a river. There were many activities for us to choose from so we were never without fun. The staff took great care of us on our activities. We loved the cook out and the smores by the fire. All in All, a wonderful experience. We would love to return someday.

My wife and I stayed at RDL for a week. Overall, it was an amazing experience. Coming from Phoenix in the summer, our two main goals were to get some good weather and get away from civilization - RDL made both possible. The clearwater river valley is as remote, wild, and scenic as it gets. We lost cell phone reception almost 45 minutes before getting to RDL but we were able to stay loosely connected to civilization via the lodge's satellite wifi. Our formal activities included a fishing float trip down the clearwater, whitewater rafting the Lochsa, and horseback riding all of which we enjoyed enormously and would recommend. The staff and hospitality is top notch - we got in late the first night and they arranged for dinner to be left out in our glamping tent. While the price of the glamping tent is a great deal, there was not much glamorous about the bathroom facilities (a rickety wooden shared outhouse). As scheduled, we moved into a cabin for the second half of our stay and were happy to have a working bathroom but did miss the rush of the stream that runs by the glamping tents at night. The food was hearty and they do a great job considering the limited grocery options nearby. The buffalo shepard's pie and the huckleberry pie a la mode were two hilites. While the food and lodging is by no means 5-star, RDL provides a good value for you money and a great base camp to explore the Bitteroot Wildnerness.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay! "Remote, wild, and scenic" is a great description...and the flow of the nearby stream does make a great lullaby! Stay in touch, and remember River Dance Lodge (and the huckleberry pie!) when you need another unplugged vacation!

Our family recently stayed at the River Dance Lodge in one of the big cabins on the Clearwater River in Kooksia, Idaho. It was in June 2013. On one of our floating fishing trips, the guide ran the raft into a "sweeper" another word for a tree branch extending into the water, and totally capsized the raft, sending my brother in law under the raft (where he could have drowned) and my sister floating downstream. If our other raft hadn't of been downstream, I don't know who would have captured her. Our guide had to swim to shore, as did my brother in law. Secondly, the cabins were somewhat dirty and neglected on the exterior porches which were badly in need of some power washing. The interiors had almost no furniture onto set your luggage or items, and the lighting was so dim and poor in the cabins you could barely see. I think River Dance Lodge needs to put some work and effort into their cabins and making sure their guides are more adequately trained.

Room Tip: Make sure your guides are the experienced ones and inspect the cabins upon arrival.

I'm very sorry that you had a frightening experience on the river with us. We do take guide training very seriously and are proud of the skill of our guides. Sometimes nature throws curve balls and in this case water currents, a fallen tree and the guide's maneuvers all joined forces and caused an upset. Rafting is inherently risky, and everyone going on a rafting trip is informed of this. It's important to note that we also give a lengthy safety talk prior to every float we do, so that our guests are prepared. "Self-rescue" is explicitly discussed, so if a swimmer does end up downstream of other craft, our instructions to swim to shore would hopefully be heeded. We fully appreciate that such an event can be very unsettling and again,I am sorry that you had this experience. In our 34 years in business as ROW Adventures, we've had very few situations like this occur.

As for the cabins, we appreciate the feedback and will work on making the improvements you suggest. Like every successful business, we do our best to learn and improve.

Sincerely,
Peter Grubb, owner

We stayed here three nights with an all-inclusive package that included great meals and fun activities. The whitewater rafting (run by Row Adventures) on the Lochsa was AMAZING! All the staff at the lodge were really helpful, they always had time to answer questions. Bryce was super and made a bunch of good recommendations for hiking in the area, even marking the spots (accurately!) on our map. The location of the River Dance Lodge is so beautiful, you can easily walk to access the river, as well as countless great spots within an easy drive. And of course our cabin was perfect, including our own hot tub right on our deck.Staying here was a big part of a wonderful vacation to celebrate our 20th anniversary, and we would love to go back again!

Thank you so much for your review and we are appreciative of your support and very happy you loved your stay with us. It's hard to believe this is our tenth year of operations at River Dance Lodge and it's folks like you that make it all worth while. Bryce is a great guide and I'm glad he pointed out some good hiking spots of which there are so many in the area. With the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness area just a few miles away, there are so many options to be immersed in nature. Thank you again and we hope to see you next season! -Peter

The large cabin was just perfect for our group of five, and could have fit several more people easily. The gas Franklin stove made the whole cabin cozy in no time, as the weather was cold for the first two days we were there. The hot tub was clean and enjoyed by all after a day of rafting on the Lochsa River. The staff was very friendly, welcoming, and helpful!
The Syringa Cafe served very good food for both breakfast and dinner, and they were more than willing to make any accomodations if we had asked. They also provided the food for ROW that the guides prepared for the rafters. It was delicious as well.
There was a charcoal bbq in the front of the cabin which could be used to grill, and also a fire pit for toasting marshmallows. The Lodge provided wood and charcoal if needed. The microwave, fridge, and coffee maker, and sink were helpful for snacks for our group, and could be used for larger meal prep if desired. We liked going to the Cafe though.
We would all recommend this location for a stay in the area or while rafting with ROW on the Lochsa River.

Thank you for your review and we're all so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We've worked hard to make the cabins feel warm and cozy and happy you enjoyed the gas fireplace and hot tub! We're fortunate to be located along the Clearwater River and that you got to enjoy rafting on the wild Lochsa, one of the best whitewater trips in the world. We hope to see you again soon!

Food was terrible, there was no choice at all not even for kids. What we did get was luke warm and of poor quality, I expected a lot more for the price charged. Very poor value for money. I could not recommend this lodge.

Room Tip: choose further back from the highway
