Description: For some The Pioneer Saloon is the first restaurant to head to when coming into town and the last place to go before leaving. For others, it's where they met their significant other, perhaps over a bar marg. The Pioneer Saloon, renowned for perfectly aged, tender and flavorful beef, is typical of an earlier Idaho where ore wagons rattled down Main Street and business was done with a handshake and a drink. Natural woods, mounted game, and period firearms help recreate an authentic saloon atmosphere. Duffy and Sheila Witmer have been the sole owners of the Pioneer Saloon since 1986. Today, with their children, Alyson, Chloe and Dillon, they strive to honor a historical classic while bringing new ideas to Ketchum's restaurant scene.

I've been dining at The Pioneer Saloon for about 25 years now. We spend our summers in Sun Valley but we do not dine here every summer. Last night I returned to 2 close friends for a late night bite to eat. It was close to 9:30PM so we were seated right away.
(in summer it can be over 1 hour wait as reservations are not accepted)
We are all so familiar with the menu that we ordered right away. I simply ordered an Idaho Baked Potato & a beef kebab. The potatoes are unusually fresh here & I enjoyed every bite with a little sour cream & chives. The beef kebab was perfectly cooked with a bit of bell peppers & red onion, the perfect late night meal, not too much. My friend ordered the shrimp which was fresh & cooked nicely on the grill with a little garlic & butter. We all had their famous bartenders margaritas with salt on the rocks & finished the meal with yet another Pio must, the mudpie. You can never go wrong here, the good & fresh, made to order & just a fun, happening place on the Main Street in Ketchum, Idaho. I've always had great service & the bar/waiting area is fun, rustic & great people watching.

I come here 4-5 times a year and it is my favorite dinner restaurant of all time. It can get EXTREMELY busy at prime dinner time in the busy times of the year so go early or late. No reservations allowed. Wait staff is nearly always excellent. Atmosphere is cowboys and dead animals, and you'll find that the menu is the same way. Prime Rib is to die for, the rice is to die for, and the baked potatoes are truly a meal in themselves. These plates will definitely fill you up and energize you for the powder day in the morning. Going to be 20-25$ for most entrees but there are lots of options. So good, and you truly haven't been to Ketchum unless you've been to the Pioneer.

See the largest real buffalo head just above one of Hemingway's shotguns in this dive of a bar. Great drink selections and service, we did not eat though.

This has to be the most over-rated restaurant in Ketchum. All local businesses we asked recommended this place first when we asked where to eat. After eating here once, none of us will go back. We thought the 30 minute wait would be worth it, but boy were we wrong. The server didnot know the menu, she gave us the wrong food - mistaking a New York for a Ribeye - and only served part of our orders. The food was mediocre at best - small portions with not a lot of flavor. In fact, we didn't even ask for the missing items as we did not figure it would be worth waiting for.

Very disappointing. I wouldn't waste my time with this place.

We were in town for a few days staying at the Sun Valley Resort. We decided to venture out one night and check out a local restaurant. The Pioneer was highly recommended by someone we knew. We were not disappointed - a very casual and fun place. Tasty chips and salsa while we waited with a nice red wine. Service was excellent and the food was great. My filet mignon was done perfectly and the dessert was amazing. Great atmosphere and excellent food -- we will go there again anytime we're in the area.
