Description: For some The Pioneer Saloon is the first restaurant to head to when coming into town and the last place to go before leaving. For others, it's where they met their significant other, perhaps over a bar marg. The Pioneer Saloon, renowned for perfectly aged, tender and flavorful beef, is typical of an earlier Idaho where ore wagons rattled down Main Street and business was done with a handshake and a drink. Natural woods, mounted game, and period firearms help recreate an authentic saloon atmosphere. Duffy and Sheila Witmer have been the sole owners of the Pioneer Saloon since 1986. Today, with their children, Alyson, Chloe and Dillon, they strive to honor a historical classic while bringing new ideas to Ketchum's restaurant scene.

The food was fantastic, probably one of the best prime ribs I've had! The staff was very friendly and attentive! Arrive early, if you are not there at 4:30/5 you could be looking at a 2-3 hour wait. If you can wait, they do have great drinks and serve chips n salsa.

I have eaten here many times in the past 35 years and have never been disappointed. I have heard people say they have the best steaks they have ever eaten.And I have to agree. The fish, shrimp and chops are also superb. The salad is crisp, fresh and very tasty. We always enjoy taking visitors there because in quintessential Sun Valley. There are stuffed huge animal heads around the upper wall, with guns and bullets displayed. It is almost always crowed and you have to be prepared to wait in bar area if you arrive between 6:30 and 8:30. The drinks are also excellent. One always sees your friends, All in all we have never been disappointed.

It's hard to believe that a restaurant could change so little in such a long time. I had my first date with my husband here in 1987 and I take great comfort in knowing exactly what I'll get here. We probably eat here 4-5 times/year, always over the Christmas/New Years holiday and typically once or twice mid-summer.

While my culiinary tastes have most definitely changed over the years, I take great comfort in not having to open the menu.
This is a western steak house. Of course there is also chicken, shrimp, lobster, etc. , but don't expect anything fancy. There is one salad: iceberg lettuce with carrots, tomatoes and cucumber. Sides are Idaho Baked Potato or rice. There are usually a couple of specials, Idaho Rainbow Trout or Salmon. If you get there early and you like ribs, ask if they have any (they rarely do) and they will save one for you.

Other important things to keep in mind. No reservations are accepted, ever, no exceptions. At Christmas, the typical wait for a table is 2 hours. Plan for it and enjoy the bar scene. Get your name in with the hostess, find a cocktail server and work on finding a place to sit for the long wait. There are some simple appetizers - steamed Artichoke, smoked trout, etc. One thing I simply can't understand, however, is how they consistently run out of Chips and Salsa so early in the night!!!!! ???
The House Margaritas on the Rocks are wonderful - and very strong.
Bottom line: Hands down best "local experience" in Ketchum/Sun Valley, but not a place to bring people with a long list of allergies and intolerances or elderly that cannot stand and wait for a table.

Typical good ole western saloon/steak house decor with all manner of "stuff" hanging every where - wouldn't have it any other way! Loud, crowded, no reservations, so waiting at this most popular restaurant is just to be expected. Relax, sit back - the bar has everything.

Perfect place for carnivores! Prime rib as good as it gets! The baked potatoes are out if this would as is the mud pie. Certainly the best steaks in town if not in Idaho!

Loved the group dinner we had here in their private downstairs room. We had a company dinner for 14 and although the upstairs was busy with lots of people eating and drinking, being downstairs felt like we had the place to ourselves. Service was excellent, quick, and accurate. Food was outstanding from start to finish. I wish I had saved room for desert. I had the sirloin, cooked perfectly to medium. The filet Mignon looked very good as well.
