Description: For some The Pioneer Saloon is the first restaurant to head to when coming into town and the last place to go before leaving. For others, it's where they met their significant other, perhaps over a bar marg. The Pioneer Saloon, renowned for perfectly aged, tender and flavorful beef, is typical of an earlier Idaho where ore wagons rattled down Main Street and business was done with a handshake and a drink. Natural woods, mounted game, and period firearms help recreate an authentic saloon atmosphere. Duffy and Sheila Witmer have been the sole owners of the Pioneer Saloon since 1986. Today, with their children, Alyson, Chloe and Dillon, they strive to honor a historical classic while bringing new ideas to Ketchum's restaurant scene.

This place is an institution, has a reputation, draws a crowd (wait times are long), but it is worth a stop if this is your first or only time in Sun Valley.

“Rustic fun place for a steak”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Pioneer is kind of small, but has a great bar area, so expect it to be a little loud and a little cramped. It is a simple menu, with no kids fare, but the steaks are pretty good. I do not think it is worth a long wait, but if you have some time to kill, and want an old ski town type of meal, it's a good place to try. Service is also good, and they get you in and out pretty quick, so don't expect a long and lingering meal.

“Most Popular restaurant in all of Idaho!”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

Exceptional food. Share a meal. For a minimal sharing charge, you will have more than enough to eat. CAUTION: Arrive before 5:30PM if you wish to eat without a long wait. Restaurant does not take reservations so there was a long wait for those arriving after 6 PM.

“Dated and boring”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

The Pioneer is "the" place to go in Ketchum, whether you're a local or an out-of-towner, many would say the Pio embodies the Sun Valley experience. I think there are other options. First of all, expect to wait at least 60 minutes for a table. While munching on cheap, stale chips and salsa, a cute waitress in cowboy boots and short skirt will be thrilled to serve you an overpriced cocktail or glass of wine (or two, be ready to throw down $20 bucks) while you sit uncomfortably on stool gazing at oversized stuffed animal heads. Vegetarians beware! Next, you'll be led to a table in a dark room with no outside light and offered yet another over priced beverage. Finally, you will be allowed to order a steak with gigantic potato and side salad which by the time it arrives, you scarf down like a heathen. If you have survived thus far without aid, then the establishment would be happy to do you in with a dose of mud pie and an ambulance ride home. Seriously, why do we savor such carnage? It's a carnal instinct which endears us to Fred Flintstone and brontosaurus burgers.

So my advice is to look beyond your extended belly and find a more refined repertoire. There is a lot more to offer in this small town than meets the eye.

“very reliable, very popular, very long waits”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

very few restaurants have had the same off the menu special for twenty years or so, but for whatever reason, the excellent stuffed trout (Idaho trout, of course) has always been available and never been on the menu.
45 minutes in the bar area has never been our idea of fun, and reservations are possible only for large groups so we go when we haven't had lunch (or much lunch) and get a table fairly quickly around 5 or so
