Owner description: Imagine an encounter with giant dinosaurs, the fascination of seeing the actual artifacts of the first explorers to conquer the South Pole 100 years ago, or the allure of creatures that can create their own light. At the Museum of Idaho, you can surround yourself with these wonders of the world. The Museum of Idaho is the intermountain west's premier museum in providing nationally and internationally acclaimed exhibits to the surrounding areas. Showcasing both traveling and permanent exhibits, we are dedicated to preserving and educating the public in the sciences, the humanities, and the natural and cultural history. RACE TO THE END OF THE EARTH Jan. 31 - Sep. 1, 2014 The Museum of Idaho is proud to be the 5th museum in the world to host this exhibition, which recounts one of the most stirring tales of Antarctic exploration. Filled with triumph and tragedy, this story chronicles the epic journey of two competing teams in their quest to be the first to reach the South Pole. GLOW: LIVING LIGHTS Sep. 26 - Nov. 29, 2014 Have you ever wondered how strange sea creatures light up the ocean? Or what makes a firefly glow? This family-friendly exhibition dives deep into the darkest corners of our earth to shed some light on this fascinating phenomena which allows creatures to produce light for communicating, camouflage, attracting prey, and for other reasons scientists still don't understand. OLDE FASHIONED CHRISTMAS AND WINTER FESTIVALS: Dec. 12, 2014 - Jan 3, 2015 *Dates subject to change. Please call the front desk to verify* FREE to the public the Museum of Idaho, the city of Idaho Falls, and the Interfaith Council are proud to announce the 7th annual Olde Fashioned Christmas and Winter Festivals presented by Chesbro Music Co. We feature a new addition each year along with your traditional favorites including nativity scenes from around the world, a collection of Santa Claus figurines, gingerbread houses, beautifully decorated trees, and also a celebration of other winter festivals--one of which highlight's Germany's celebration of Christmas. Along with Live Christmas music from 4pm-close every evening, special appearances from Santa Claus, there is also a canned food drive benefiting the local Idaho Falls Food bank. Don't forget to write your letters to Santa and put them in our Santa Claus Special Delivery Mailbox located in front of the museum. Kick off the holiday season by attending the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 11. For more information about our tree lighting ceremony please contact the front desk.

“Excellent Kid's Adventure Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

I took my 9 year old niece and 5 year old daughter to see the Carousel Exhibit -fabulous! I was more interested in reading and learning about the history of the carousel animals, engines, etc. than the two girls. However, once we entered the Kid's Adventure room with enormous teepee and log cabin, the girls were in heaven! There are pioneer dress up clothes, a water pump, rocking chair, chairs & table, dishes, crockery, a cradle, baby dolls with clothes that they played with for an hour! There are also two computers set up for learning games; the girls loved writing their names in hieroglyphics. I sat and read my book while the girls played. There was also a large carved wooden horse with a rope mane and tail and saddle, a rock cave to explore, and a chest full of stuffed animals. I was pretty impressed with the museum and the carousel exhibit. However, I felt the gift shop was lacking. No magnets that had Musseum of Idaho on them, just Idaho. I collect magnets as souveniers. Not too many things to look at or purchase. They could use some beefing up in the gift shop department. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The girls were able to take a ride on a carousel for $1, too!

This was a fun site to see. The work that went in to is was great and the history of them was great to see. It brought back memories of a simpler time in my life. It was neat to see the hands on to see how they work. The working one was fun to see. To anyone that has the time to stop by the museum in Idaho Falls be for the exibit is gone you need to see it.
