I really enjoyed a very different side to Venice...for a day I spent roaming Lido. Spent a leisurely few hours at the Exelsior overlooking the beach, sipping icy white wine, dipping in the calm Adriatic on a scorching day in June. We wandered the palm lined streets, and lanes gazing at the old mansions of the rich and famous of bygone days, St Nicholas' monastery....

The first thing that surprised was that you had to pay for some parts of the beach which was a foreign concept to me. On the other hand the beach itself is very lovely, the water is warm and there is a great atmosphere (The sand is a little dirty...) there are rows of shops/bars/restaurants on the main road. Its a great way to relax after a day exploring venice.

If you have been walking around in the crowded streets of Venice for some days and need to relax a bit in the sun, the beach in Lido island is a great spot for recreation. The water is really shallow and you can walk pretty far out in the ocean still standing. Nice sand, a bit sticky but very clean without garbage. If you are on a low budget and don't afford to rent sun beds you can just bring your own towel and lay there for free. There are carts there selling beer, water etc. but you can alto buy food and drinks at the "Billa" supermarket for a very low price about 200 meters before you reach the beach on the main street. The only thing i found annoying with this place was the crowd of vendors trying to sell you towels, sunglasses, scarfs and other stuff every minute. But as long you ignore their offers they won't disturb you for long. You can easily get to the beach by taking the water buss line nr 1 from St.Marcus waterbus-stop to the lido waterbus-stop. The ride will take about 10-15 min and will cost 7 euro each way. When you get to Lido you just walk down the main street from the water buss-stop and you will be at the beach in 10 minutes.

Thre is a "free beach" costs nothiong to go in but you pay for the toilet, cold water shower and changerooms. You can also hire beach umbrellas, but recomend you buy one at the local supermarket. It only costs 9 Euro vs 18 Euro to hire one. The local pedlars selling hats, glasses etc are a bit of a nuisance but none the less a very relaxing day at the beach.

That was my New Year's resolution - to swim in the Adriatic Sea. Lovely beach with dressing facilities and restaurant. Reached by vaparetto from the Venice. We went there two days because it was such great fun to swim in the warm sea.
