“the water: beach”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

the beach was clean and the water was shallow; the kids enjoyed it.
because of its salty nature the water caused some 'red' blotches on the kids thighs. an ointment was used for their 'ouchies'.

I visited Lido beach in April and September of this year. Both times it was sunny but windy, so just had a walk up the beach and over some rocks. There are loads of beach huts to hire, which would be great if you 're here for the day. There's a cafe on the front and some bars/open air cafes along the road. A must to visit if you are staying on The Lido, and such a contrast to central Venice. A great place to combine a sightseeing holiday with a beach holiday.

“Do you like Italian beaches?”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

Italian beaches are a weakness of mine and the one opposite the old Hotel des Bains is a particular favourite. Admittedly it is an arm and a leg for a beach hut in the summer but who would be without the privacy of a place to change, the sun beds, the awning and the delightful beach bar? (Not to mention the bagnino who leads you there and puts out the furniture).
Now a word of caution. The Hotel des Bains is under reconstruction (word has it the money has run out in fact and it is stuck but that's a whole other story). This means it no longer owns the beach and cuts are obviously being made by the 'new' company to judge by july summer 2012. In particular the restaurant has lost its darling espresso cups and napkins and is going the way of paper plates and fast food. I imagine this can only get worse.
Still the Aperol spritz goes down a treat and so far the beach itself is groomed to expectation and a fabulous place for people watching. Currently I am here again in December and can report that it is CLOSED. No dog walkers and serendipitous shell collectors here as you would find in England. A winter beach is a closed beach for Italians, amore.

PS the smartest beach is still the Excelsior if you can afford it but this one is next best.

“A mandatory Venice experience”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

First let me just say that Lido is not a Caribbean beach. Don't expect it to be. It's a wonderful detour from the hustle and bustle of Venice. This is a real place where real people live and vacation from real places in Italy and Europe, not a made for beach vacation hi-rise beach resort that displaced a local fishing village on some Caribbean island. Locals rent little cabanas for the summer so they can keep their stuff on the beach without having to schlep it every day and have a place to change clothing and relax out of the sun. I only wish that the American family beach destinations had the forethought to provide such services. Spend a few Euros and rent loungers and an umbrella from one of the private operators and you will get access to changing facilities and impeccably clean bathrooms and showers. We loved it so much that we came back for a second time during our week long trip. Just great.
