This used to be a top hotel, and retains its great advantage of being so close to and part of Venice, but with space, a pool and a wide sandy beach.

However lack of investment together with a general staff attitude of surliness that suggests the guests are a nuisance who spoil their day. A major overhaul of the building plus the team are needed to bring the place into this century.

Plus points - the hotel shuttle boat to San Marco means you can enjoy the splendours of the city, yet return for rest and relaxation on the Lido Island.

Negatives, smoking room allocated when non smoking was booked, non working safe in room, non working air conditioner in room. Breakfast not great, barely 2 star food, plus unhelpful staff. No menu to suggest other items available [which they were, but they don't want to tell you in case you order it!].

Another stay at our favourite hotel. As good as ever. Since last year the public areas have been spruced up with lots of new and comfortable furniture. This year we splashed out on a de luxe room with seaview on the 6th floor. The room was superb, with a large, very private, south facing balcony with chairs and table –ideal for sunbathing. The Duchess of Cambridge would be quite safe here. The bathroom was large and well equipped. Even the over-bath shower was fairly benign (all showers of course are basically malevolent and particularly hate strangers). The food in the main restaurant was really fine and the service impeccable. The rack of lamb was as good as any we have tasted and the fish excellent. We also ate at the little restaurant just outside the hotel, La Tavernetta, which has a spectacular wine list and a multilingual sommelier, Ottavio (sommelier of the year for the Veneto in 2011). Their food is very good and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Get a room as high up as possible

About a year ago on an Autumn morning, I was exploring the beach at Venice Lido when I came across this magnificent hotel. I was dressed scruffily, but I dared to enter, go to reception and ask if it was possible to have 'morning coffee'.

The receptionist could not have been more charming and insisted on accompanying me to the bar area and requested the barman to look after me. This he proceeded to do and I was shown to a table on the patio overlooking the beach and sea. The coffee duly arrived, but this was a large, 'silver service' jug of excellent coffee with an assortment of biscuits arranged with care on a silver tray.

I loved the whole experience. I could not have been cared for any better, or with greater charm, had I been a famous film star or a millionaire, which I very obviously was not, all for the cost of 5 euros and a tip.

When I win the lottery, I will return to stay for a few nights and enjoy the full 'Excelsior' experience!

My thanks and gratitude to your wonderful staff, Rob Macdougall.

This hotel is five star all the way. The views are fantastic over the ocean and the rooms are very large and spacious. A fabulous breakfast with sparkling wine included. A short boat rude to the main island and a laundromat 500 meters away.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room.

My girlfriend had previously stayed at this hotel while visiting Venice, but I had yet to have the opportunity to visit it. None the less, this past week we spent a night in the hotel and I found it to be very enjoyable. Everyone there was incredibly friendly, from the doorman to the staff to even other guests, everyone was friendly at this hotel.

Ground zero for the Venice Film Festival, where my company's film was having the World premiere. Rooms are spacious and airy, and nicely decorated. Very easy access to Venice via free boat taxi. On weekends the bar rocks and the hotel fills up with very well heeled local Venitians. If you are coming to the Film Festival make sure that your room is facing away from the ocean (toward canal boat dock) so you can watch from your bedroom the offload of celebrities while the fans and paparazzi flock to. Almost of all of the red carpet pictures for the film festival happen in this hotel.

First of all it must be said this hotel is big...very big indeed. The reception areas are grand and lavish & the whole hotel is on a scale that recalls a bygone era which is reinforced by the photographs of stars from the golden age of film who stayed there in the Lido's heyday. It would be hard not to be impressed by the sheer magnificence of it all.
The welcome from the staff was courteous and professional and our room (Grand deluxe with garden view) both overlooked part of the garden & the Adriatic as well. The Moorish inspired room was large, comfortable and pitch black when blinds and curtains pulled (a very good night's sleep) but the bathroom fairly ordinary in comparison to other areas of the hotel.
The shuttle boat from the hotel to the San Marco area left regularly every half hour either to the Danielli hotel or the Europa and was a lovely twenty minute ride.Often times, late at night (the last boat from Venice back to the hotel departs at midnight),we would be the only couple on the boat and it really did feel like our own private launch.
There's not a great deal to see in the immediate area surrounding the hotel and this certainly is a good option if you want to escape the hustle & bustle of the city.Should you not want to take the boat across to Venice, there are two very acceptable restaurants close to hand...La Tavernetta & Valentinos.
Breakfast was served in a big dining room with a good choice of both hot and cold dishes, and there was even Prosecco to hand for those who want an early morning boost.
Prices in the hotel for drinks, meals and sundries are expensive as is befitting of a 5 star hotel but there are options both locally & of course in Venice itself.
Prices vary greatly for the rooms so best to check out several sites for the best deal but having just returned home I am already missing the whole experience & would return in an instant.
