My wife and I stayed at the Dog Bark Park Inn in September, 2013. First of all, the inn is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Idaho, which is saying a lot. But the total experience from the greeting by the most personable couple that you could ever hope to meet to the cleanliness of the room and the delicious gourmet snacks is an experience not to be missed if you are in the area and make reservations ahead of time.

Room Tip: There is only one room, so if you are lucky enough to get a reservation, you have a great room. The...

Depending on the season, the look of our region's agricultural prairie lands are varied. The vast fields of wheat & canola are a patchwork of greens & brilliant yellow from late May through early July. Gradually, all turns golden with harvest in August & September. Very soon parts of the vast barren tracts of cropland begin to turn green again as replanting & fall growth ensues.

It is true, as the reviewer mentioned, that our inn is not suitable for those with certain mobility restrictions. Fifteen years ago when we begain building the big dog we possessed only the dream & hope that people might come to stay. We made the best financial & design decisions we knew we could accomplish at the time. These decisions precluded manicured flat lawn & elevator access to the dog. Were we to do it all over again of course our decisions would be different.

We stayed in this great on Labor Day. It is really a special treat. We arrived late and during a phone call with Frances, she gave us very clear instructions for self check-in. We had no problem to get in and enjoyed a lovely night. Next morning we spent some time to walk around and took pictures of the things in the park. You would think there is nothing else can top a comfortable room, dog cookies and other nice/healthy food, variety of games and an interesting guest book... until we met Frances and Dennis. It was such a great pleasure to talk to them for several hours. Dennis gave us a tour of his workshop. They shared some very inspiring and thoughtful insights about life and business. We would definitely recommend a stay in this very special place and if you do so, do not miss the opportunity to meet Frances and Dennis. Thank you Frances and Dennis for a memorable holiday!

Room Tip: You have the entire dog for your own so it is impossible to get a bad room!

Spending time visiting with our guests is the absolutely best part of our business! A recent guest summed it up well when describing the importance of travel by saying "It is really about the people." We could not agree more. While experiencing new places may be the motivation for travel, encountering the people that live in the places travelled to provides the greatest pleasure and lasting memories.

We are glad to create dog carvings in advance of a guest's arrival to be certain their particular breed will be available. Since our giftshop inventory fluctuates quite a bit we recommend pre-ordering.

We drove down from Vancouver, BC to see this place and it was definitely worth the trip! Everything about our stay was excellent. Dennis and Frances are amazing hosts and they pointed us in the direction of a delicious local Mexican restaurant (Palenque in neighbouring Grangeville) as well as great entertainment (a double feature at the drive-in movie theatre). And obviously the accommodations couldn't be more fun and unique. We have sweet memories of our time with Sweet Willy and only have great things to say about our stay at the Dog Bark Park Inn.

We are always happy to make suggestions for restaurants & activities that we think will be especially appealing to the unique interests of each of our guests. Palenque Mexican Restaurant in nearby Grangeville is certainly one of our favorite eateries because of the good food, good prices. We also have a personal connection with the owner & manager who have commissioned us to create wooden artwork that decorates the exteriors of their two Idaho restaurants. The second Palenque Restaurant is in Kamiah, Idaho which is a 45 minute drive from Dog Bark Park.

After staying three nights in Lewiston downwind from a giant paper mill, I moved on to Cottonwood and the Dog Bark Park Inn -- an oasis in the prairie. The giant beagle is delightful, and Dennis and Frances's workshop is a genuinely captivating folk art environment. The room is comfortable and private. Frances stocks the room with terrific home-baked treats. I've never been one to chat with the inn keepers, but Dennis and Frances were so interesting, kind, and plugged in to the area's people, sites, and history that I was thrilled with their company.

That our prairie air is free of city smog is something we tend to take for granted until reminded by visitors that the air is so clear & fresh here. On clear nights the stars are abundant & moonlight enjoyed especially when it streams through the upstairs window. Idaho, though vast is size, is really like living cross-town from each other. Since Idaho has been our home for decades it's easy to accummulate personal recommendations & comments about most places in Idaho where our visitors might wish to travel. We're most delighted to share our knowledge.

We planned our whole trip around staying at the Dog Park. After speaking with Francis we found the only available date in August was the 13th .Sooooo-we were on the move. Hopping in our old Corvette, putting down the top we headed out. Traveling through Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana and finally to Cottonwood. What a great trip! Can't stop thinking about it and showing everyone the pix of Sweet Willie. What a great way to start our bucket list check off!

That travellers schedule their entire trip based on availability at our one-unit inn is something until recently we never considered would be done. We are thrilled & honored that the big dog is given such high regard. We strive to make each visit here special & worthy of the journey.

We’ve been to about 17 states and recently took two huge roadtrips in America, and we’ve stayed at more than 20 hotels, motels, B&B’s and lodges. We’ve always picked out very different and contrasting places to stay, either bizarre, unique, historic or luxurious. I honestly don’t know in which of those categories to place The Dog Bark Park Inn, but we know this: It was the most memorable, wonderful and fun place we have ever stayed in the states.

We only had one night there, and we picked it out because I wanted a fun place to stay for my 30-year-old birthday (nothing says “I’ll never grow up!” like turning 30 inside a huge dog, right?!). We drove for ages to get there, through beautiful landscapes of Idaho, and Frances and Dennis greeted us by the dog. We talked for hours, and we were fascinated both by their stories about the dog and their overwhelmingly fantastic personalities. They were fun, kind, interesting and just the most wonderful and inspirational people we have ever met in the states.

So basically they just handed us the keys to the dog, and they drove off! This is when we realized we had the whole dog, the fun garden with all the sculptures and the prairie to ourselves the whole night and morning! So in reality, it’s like having your very own house in the middle of the prairie – and it’s a dog! We had so much fun – we had dinner at the restaurant down the road and brought beer to the dog, which we enjoyed by the sunset on the balcony. When it got dark and the coyotes started making scary noises, we headed back in and made puzzles! The interior of the dog is extremely clean and nice. And I’m a bit of a perfectionist, always finding something wrong with even the most expensive luxury hotels! But the dog was spotless.

Finally next morning it was my birthday, and Frances had prepared a huge and delicious homemade breakfast for us, waiting in the fridge. We ate on one of the benches in the garden, and when Dennis and Frances came, Frances had brought the most delicious birthday brownies! We talked for ages again and bought tons of chainsaw art and souvenirs. Eventually we had to leave – an hour late, because we had such a good time talking to Frances and Dennis! And we were honestly almost in tears as we drove off, because we knew we would never again find a place like this, and have an as unique experience. THANK YOU Frances & Dennis! You are truly inspirational, and we will never forget you! Hugs from Morten & Pernille, Denmark

At the time a guest makes a reservation we seek, if possible, why the guest is coming & what their interests are so that we can anticipate what would make their stay unique & special. In this case, we knew being at Dog Bark Park on that special birthday was vastly important & from Morten we learned his wife not only really liked chocolate but would be hugely impressed to receive a home-baked chocolate surprise presented with a kiss from her husband. We love helping make special moments that hopefully will be special memories for a long time. They are for us.
