“Worst service I have ever had in a restaurant in Boise”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2010

We live nearby and just biked over tonight. The restaurant had one person eating at the counter and 3 parties outside when we sat down. There were two waitresses (an blond one and a tall one). It was obvious that they saw us, but they were "busy" talking to the guy at the counter and doing what looked like cleaning utensils near the cash register.

The blond waitress came outside to the patio a couple of times, but totally ignored us each time. After sitting there for 10 minutes being ignored we walked across the street to the Tavern. The food was great and the service attentive. Locavore is the worst place I have ever been to in Boise (and I have been to literally 50+ if not a hundred) and you have to avoid it if you you do not want a most frustrating experience.

“A great little cafe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2010

I'm surprised by some of the poorer reviews. This casual little cafe offers up a good value and high quality food. I find it much improved from the previous restaurants at the same location. On my multiple visits, food is always prepared well and clearly seasoned by someone that knows how to cook. The menu is simple and perfect for a local eatery.

“Avoid Locavore”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2010

Locavore is close to my home, se we have really been trying to like it. But we have given up. The services is slow, food often cold. The menu offers little, particularly for breakfast. The portions are very small, and the food is just not very good: over-salted, over cooked. And it is overpriced to boot. Do try to buy local, but don't spend your money here.

“Great Gourmet Food in a Casual Space”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2010

Locavore shines for people interested in tasty combinations, home-made bread and scones, and out-of-the-ordinary wines. In three trips there, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the food, to say nothing of the well-chosen wines by the glass. A panino with Portobello mushroom, carmelized onions and spinach was satisfying and hearty, with a balance of sweet and savory flavors. I had raw oysters, which came with a pleasant red wine mignonette: fresh and tasty. (Ok, the oysters are not from Idaho.) There is also a kids' menu with typical kid things, and cookies. The sliced steak with sweet potato fries was likewise agreeably filling and nicely prepared. There is an intriguing variety of salads: Greek quinoa, curry chicken, antipasto, Caesar, and potato. They are beyond agreeably interesting and genuinely tasty. The curry is mild. I was less impressed with the Caesar salad but in Boise, almost no one eats anchovies - or authentic Caesar salads. (Weird thing: Boiseans are total wimps about spicy food - as in curry - but they always want tabasco sauce at the table for breakfast. Go figure.)

A judicious selection of wines compliments the food. The Sauvignon Blanc has a great balance of citrus flavors, a medium body and the right level of acidity, with no discernible herbaceousness. There are several Chardonnays and a Pinot Gris from the Northwest. A house Merlot was surprisingly deep and flavorful for the price. They also featured an Acrobat (Oregon) Pinot Noir which is soft and beguiling - with none of the barnyard terroir that one often finds with a Pinot. Best of all was the "NxNW" (North by Northwest) Cabernet, with its stylish label. This is a Meritage blend of Bordeaux red varietals (in this case, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot) and is surprisingly complex. It is ready to drink right now. love it.

The service is attentive and helpful. This restaurant is in Bown Crossing, a business neighborhood in Southeast Boise that is generally quiet and pleasant. They serve breakfast each day, brunch on weekends. I would recommend this restaurant for good food in a casual atmosphere, including on their patio. (Occasionally, someone gets the idea that Johnny Cash is suitable but they can be dissuaded from letting him loose very often.) This week for First Thursday, they are featuring a Flamenco guitarist, vocalist, and dancer, with accompanying Spanish tapas and appropriate wine. I tried the tempranillo and it was very decent, without harsh tannins, despite being quite young (from 2008).

“Better for lunch than dinner; good desserts!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2010

This restaurant recently opened in Boise and I have no experience with prior restaurants in the same location, which the other reviews to date appear to be focused on. So, starting with a clean slate, I was interested to try this restaurant which claims to focus on local ingredients. Though it is open for breakfast, I have not been there for that.

For dinner, with a friend, we tried flank steak w/sweet potato fries and the salmon with potatoes. House salads were very good. The steak was essentially good, and the fries were average to good. The salmon was good but the potatoes that came with it were not fully cooked. Our prawn appetizer was good - but the prawns are from Seattle, not really local to Boise.....Dessert was better than the entrees - a wide selection - and the panna cotta with fig was excellent.

A different day I tried lunch here with a friend, and we were both very pleased with the sandwich offerings. The lunch was very good while the dinner, aside from dessert, was just average to above average. Both times service was decent. Parking is a little bit limited so you may want to avoid peak times.
