There lies a network of hikes (Table top hiking trail), connected to the same gravel parking lot, in the general vacinity as the penitentiary museum. It's worth taking a quick hike for an areal view of the Museum as well as the skyline of downtown Boise.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

Self-guided tours, it took us a couple of hours to see everything, including the weapons museum. There are some informational signs on the wall, but we had a lot more questions and think it would have been neat to have a guide with us, or maybe a handout with more information on it.

“Really cool!”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Really cool and right next door to the botanical gardens, which was amazing! Parts of it were being restored while we were there, but it was not too disruptive. There were many displays to see throughout the penitentiary as well as an impressive weapons collection from around the globe.

“Interesting”

It was fun exploring the grounds and being inside the actual prison. We got there kind of late so the only thing I would recommend would be to get there at a minimum of an hour and a half before closing. We were kind of rushed and they start closing down some of the exhibits at 4:30 even though they say they are open until 5:00. So that was the only bad thing. Other then that, a great experience for the whole family. Make sure you also go into the room across from the admissions and get a picture of the kids (or your spouse) in jail garb with prisoner signs that are there to use and free to take pictures of with your own camera.

“Hike to Table Rock above”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

We did not actually tour the penitentiary but there is a great trail to hike up to Table Rock for an excellent view of the Boise Basin, including the city--remember to bring water and SUNSCREEN!
