The 36th Street Garden Center & Bistro is a pretty place for a nice lunch or dinner. The outdoor patio is wonderful in warm weather, and the indoor space is open and large, yet still warm and inviting. So what's the problem? Mainly the food. The kitchen is clearly trying to be creative, and several of the dishes show some real inspiration and effort. But overall most of the food seems to be just average. And there seems to be a consistent problem with getting it to the table hot. The baked mac & cheese appetizer came out bubbling, but 3 of the entrees for a party of 6 came out luke warm at best. The Pasta Carmenere was tasty but the Herbed Chicken just okay. Perhaps it's that the focus seems to be more on the ladies showing up for lunch? One indication of that is that the dinner service stops by 8 p.m. A bad dining experience? Not at all. Just not an outstanding one. But the environment is lovely and the service was very good. And one additional saving grace -- a wine list that is very affordable with some nice choices.
