The 36th Street Garden Center & Bistro is a pretty place for a nice lunch or dinner. The outdoor patio is wonderful in warm weather, and the indoor space is open and large, yet still warm and inviting. So what's the problem? Mainly the food. The kitchen is clearly trying to be creative, and several of the dishes show some real inspiration and effort. But overall most of the food seems to be just average. And there seems to be a consistent problem with getting it to the table hot. The baked mac & cheese appetizer came out bubbling, but 3 of the entrees for a party of 6 came out luke warm at best. The Pasta Carmenere was tasty but the Herbed Chicken just okay. Perhaps it's that the focus seems to be more on the ladies showing up for lunch? One indication of that is that the dinner service stops by 8 p.m. A bad dining experience? Not at all. Just not an outstanding one. But the environment is lovely and the service was very good. And one additional saving grace -- a wine list that is very affordable with some nice choices.

Tried to like it. But at steak house prices with tea party portions this isn't the Ritz Carlton........more like a sandwich shop with an inflated ego.

The 36 Street Bistro in Boise offers an excellent lunch setting. The restaurant shares a building with the 36th Street Garden Center which adds to the charm. The outdoor seating is pleasant, the staff friendly and the the setting relaxing. The food is good but could use a little more originality. I ordered the veggie sandwich and since I had previous experience with it, knew to ask for more than just the zucchini so with tomato, lettuce and onion added, it was delicous. Our lunch was $32 (with just ice tea) and that seemed reasonable. I definitely recommend and plan to take out of town company there this weekend. Enjoy!

I have visited this restaurant 4 times over the last year. It is such a beautiful setting I really want to like it. I have never had good food and good service at the same time. My last visit was for Sunday brunch and we arrived as soon as they opened. There were only 3 other tables seated and yet they could not manage to get hot food to us. I think they are not preheating their plates. My eggs benedict was woefully undercooked, the whites were still runny. Wish they would get their act together.
