I chose this hotel because it was the only place I could book on agoda. It's not too bad actually with nice room and free wifi (slow speed at night, but quite fast during the day). Friendly and helpful staffs. Shopping Mall is just under your feet. What else would you look for more?

Room Tip: west wing zone is good to see the mystic Borneo's sunset

If a 4 star hotel charges US$60 a night, there's got to be a catch. At best, its 3 stars, but with conveniences like flat-screen TV (watched the BBC and English football games live) and free LAN, it does offer 4 star facilities.
In stand-alone hotels (Tawau has no big-name hotels), one would expect discrepancies in service standards, but having said that, the staff do try their best to please. You do get a clean comfortable bed and a great shower. There's a live band laying in the club in the basement and the lobby is attached to a mid-class shopping mall next door.

Room Tip: Higher floors facing west have a seaview.

very disappointing! The internet and safe did not work at all. The TV reception was so bad we could barely watch it. When we tried to order room service at 7:30am we were told it was not possible, dispite the menu in the room listing breakfast.

Requested a non-smoking room, but our room had clearly had smokers recently.

Spent a couple of hours in the kareoke bar. We were the only people there.

Staff were friendly and tried to be helpful, but for a hotel this new the place is broken already!

When we asked for a taxi to the airport they insisted on putting us in the hotel car rather than hailing a cab from the street. The car had no fuel so we had to stop for petrol. We made the flight, but only just.

Hotel is way out of town, so plan on needign a car or taxis. rent a car fromt he airport if you need one. The travel desk in the hotel can book cars (apparently), but they had none available, hardly spoke english and didn't seem able/willing to phone any other companies or give us their details.

We have booked a king size bed through the internet a day before we check in. Upon arrival, we waited at the front desk for a good 5 minutes before we were greeted. Through out the 5 minutes there was a F/O staff right infront of us all this while on the phone and seems to be ignoring us. She finally notice us when we greeted her! The whole process of checking in was a joke, she seems to be irritated by us, unhelpful, rude and very unprofessional. We were so mad by her behavior we decided to leave and check in to another hotel which is much much more better. (Shervinton Hotel)

We stayed in the promenade hotel for 2 nights, on the way back from Diving in Sipidan. We usually spring for budget to mid range options but decided to treat ourselves - we paid 150 RM per night boking on the hotels own website - thats about 30GBP a night inc breakfast which for a 4 star hotel is pretty decent value. The rooms are modern and very comfortable - we enjoyed watching a few new releases on the huge plasma! Breakfast was a huge buffet with a great selection of breads, pastries, french toast etc. I also used the gym which was included in the room rate - fairly basic gym - lots of aerobic equipment but no free weights. The sauna and Jacuzzi were nice - they could do with turning on the AC in the gym though. We didnt try the buffet dinner at the hotel decided it was a bit to expensive - there is a food court in the LG floor of the shopping mall that is joined to the hotel which offers a decent selection and very good value. Its about 15-20mins walk into the town centre and its not very pedestrian friendly. However with that in mind there is nothing worth going into the town centre for. We spent our free day in Tawau treking in the Tawau hills national park - highly recommended! (beware of leeches!) between 30-40 RM each way in a taxi. We noticed there are quite a few business hotels in the town centre which are probably a bit cheaper - but we enjoyed staying at the promenade and would recommend it

Average hotel, no major issues except no staff /concierge upon our arrival. We struggled with 3 bigs bags. Only one person manning the reception. Luckily, we were the only guest that arrived at that particular time. Room and breakfast was fair. Location from the center is a bit far off.

We were part of a group that had to stay overnight in Tawau, I suspect the same as Davies 72. We did not get off to a good start as when trying to check in, I was standing right at the desk and was completely ignored by the staff! They seemed to be doing paperwork so we waited patiently. However, after 5 minutes of no acknowledgement whatsoever, I finally walked over to the very end of a long desk and said to a young man standing there "We need to check in". Very sad that one would have to do that and not a very good first impression. On the whole, though, the staff seem pleasant and try to be helpful.

The Promenade tries very hard to be a 4-star hotel with seemingly modern and nicely furnished rooms on their website. However, the reality is the whole place has a feel of slight griminess to it, as though it is never quite clean. The furnishings appear nice in pictures, but in reality, they are very cheap construction, and need desperate repair or replacement. We were given a twin room (we didn't have a choice in the matter due to our large group). The carpet had not been vacuumed and either had stains or bits of lint? (I hope) on it. A chair in the corner was upholstered in cheap fabric that was splitting in numerous areas on the seat. A/C was barely adequate and like we had heard from others in our group, a noxious smell would often waft from the drain on the bathroom floor. I took care of this by folding a towel on top of it. Beds were on the hard side, but fairly comfortable. The flat-screen tv worked well, and surprisingly had a good selection of channels.

We had the buffet for dinner, and it wasn't too bad. Some dishes of course, were done better than others and we were pleasantly surprised by the desserts. Service was quite good, and the manager of the restaurant was extremely pleasant and helpful. He, in fact, was the best thing we found about the hotel. Breakfast was done better, with a good assortment of tropical fruit and a omelet/egg station. Some of the waitstaff on breakfast duty, it seems, have learned the "ignore them and they might go away" technique of the front desk.

Like others have said, the hotel is a long way out of town - there is small mall attached and has enough to amuse one for an hour or two. There is a hawker court in the basement and we did find some decent Chicken Rice for lunch, plus if you're looking for some foodie souvenirs from Malaysia, the supermarket is fun to browse.

Would we return? I suppose if we had to we would, as this is supposedly the best hotel in town, but I think our main goal would be to not overnight in Tawau again!
