We arrived at nearby hotel in Union City about 8 pm on a dark Saturday evening. Asked the hotel staff to recommend a restaurant within walking distance where we could get a hot meal. We are in our late 60s and think we look elderly although senior discounts are frequently offered to us automatically when we travel.
JR Crickets is in a small shopping center. Most of the stores has their signs turned on, but not Crickets. We had to walk around the perimeter to find it. I was going to remind the management that their sign was off - but never got that far
When we opened the door to enter the volume of wall to wall HUGE screen TVs and a music sound track nearly knocked us down. It was dark inside, illuminated with flashing disco lights. We had found a sports bar. We were obviously out of our element. I think the multiple waitresses who served us recognized this and tried to make us feel better with their attentive service.
We could not carry on a conversation because of the noise level. But I noticed people talking at the tables around us. Also, many tables were populated with whole families including young children. It's obviously a popular restaurant in this part of town
Food prices seemed reasonable- I had a shrimp platter for $13, my wife had a Philly cheese sandwich for $8.50. It took 30 minutes to get our meal after ordering. A 15% gratuity was automatically added to the bill (called gratuity on the initial bill and service charge in the charge slip) but there was a additional line for tips. Total bill for the two of us was $48 which included 2 beers and lemon drop cocktail.
This is probably an ok place for locals, but definitely not the quiet sit down restaurant sought out by road travelers.
