My wife and I have eaten here several times during visits to Tybee Island. This place is low key, informal dining. The food is good, the service is good, its reasonably priced, and has a nice location. Its just the kind of place you would expect on a coastal island. I see no reason not to eat again.

A couple dozen of us Lowcountry senior bikers rode over to Tybee Island on one of our frequent luncheon outings, and we stopped this time at A-J's for some typical Lowcountry cuisine - seafood, gumbo and the like. One of us had a hamburger, but he's originally from Wisconsin and doesn't know any better. Located a few short blocks on the "other side" of the island from the Atlantic, you'll find A-J's to be a real neat little joint, one that you should patronize at least once if you're visiting these parts. Park where you can in front, or across the street in a dirt and grass lot. Come on in through a little store into the bar and dining area, tacky but cozy, pass through another dining area, just as informal as it can be, and there you are out on the back deck, surrounded by Lowcountry atmosphere - water, docs, boats, birds, lots of old stuff. Outside is where you'll soak up the experience; skip the inside. The menu is pretty limited, but what's on it is pretty darn good. Try the gumbo - filled up with shrimp (local we hope!), sausage, rice and who knows what else. A little hot sauce for me. The platters are good, too - shrimp, scallops, oysters, fish - mainly fried, but you can get a grilled or blacked fish on a po' boy. I did a small bowl of gumbo, a shrimp platter with dozen or so tasty morsels and some good crunchy cole slaw, and that, with a soft drink and the tip for very good service, came to around $30, kind of pricey for a little lunch. Well, I guess that the "island" idea (like Sanibel, Captiva, Amelia, Hilton Head or Manhattan) results in a price boost, but what the heck? Life's too short to worry about it.

Another Tybee favorite, A-J's has great food. If you go in the summer, you can sit outside and enjoy the sunset. This has become a local favorite for its consistent food and service.

If you would like to eat out on a pier over-looking the river, then eat at AJ's! It is much more preferable if it is warm outside, of course, but what an experience!

My husband and I ordered conch fritter appetizer and both got the fried "flounder" poboy with fries. It all sucked. Conch fritter was mostly like a hush puppy. Balls of batter with barely any conch in it. Served with some flavorless sauce on the side. Our poboys came....with some tasteless piece of fried whiting/flounder, whatever they wanna call it. The tomatoes on it tasted like dish soap. Even the pickle tasted weird. They served it with a side of more flavorless sauce. Fries were horrible. Tasteless, no seasoning. The whole meal sucked. Would've had a better meal at captain d's
