Tybee Island is its own separate municipality; if you're expecting Savannah on a beach, you'll be surprised. Residents elect city council members who vow to maintain Tybee in its current state -- no high-rises, no (or few) fast-food chains; almost everything is local, mom-and-pop. If you visit the beach during warm months, expect heavy traffic on the causeway from Savannah. Autumn and winter months are when the locals take a deep breath, ride their bicycles, walk their dogs, walk the beaches in peace, and enjoy their island. There are a lot of food joints here who cater to drop-in tourists; and there are a few really good eating establishments owned by, and appreciated by, local Tybee residents. Definitely not Hilton Head or Destin; certainly not upscale Sanibel and Captiva. Actress Bullock owns a house here, as does rocker John Mellencamp -- it's not about the glitter; it's about the natural beautiful and peace.
