Tybee Island is its own separate municipality; if you're expecting Savannah on a beach, you'll be surprised. Residents elect city council members who vow to maintain Tybee in its current state -- no high-rises, no (or few) fast-food chains; almost everything is local, mom-and-pop. If you visit the beach during warm months, expect heavy traffic on the causeway from Savannah. Autumn and winter months are when the locals take a deep breath, ride their bicycles, walk their dogs, walk the beaches in peace, and enjoy their island. There are a lot of food joints here who cater to drop-in tourists; and there are a few really good eating establishments owned by, and appreciated by, local Tybee residents. Definitely not Hilton Head or Destin; certainly not upscale Sanibel and Captiva. Actress Bullock owns a house here, as does rocker John Mellencamp -- it's not about the glitter; it's about the natural beautiful and peace.

While in Savannah for the week of Thanksgiving we went to Tybee Island specifically for the view. The beach closest to the the lighthouse did not have many people there but the view was great. It was a bit chilly the entire week and the breeze off of the water wasn't helping. There were more people and things to do near the pier pavilion area; which put me in the mindset of a scaled down Myrtle Beach, SC. The pier has some food service but was closed for either off-season or the holiday. I would love to be there when the weather is warm and it's a sight worth seeing. The signs directing you to the specific areas are turtles and kind of small so be watching when you see one to guide your way.

Our rental was steps away from this clean and beautiful beach. I was up each morning to take sunrise pictures and loved every minute I was there. The beach is clean and free of trash. It has a lovely peaceful , relaxing atmosphere. One of the top beaches I've visited.

Have come here for several years at Thanksgiving time. Weather is usually in the 60's and 70's. Not this year. Colder but many people still walking beach with hats, gloves, heavy coats n scarfs! Lots of sand dollars on beach n pretty shells. Great place for families.

This is one of the most relaxing and quiet beaches in the United States. The homes, views and the beach itself is amazing. This is one of God's most majestic places on the face of the earth.
