I had high expectations for this beach vacation. We stayed on Tybee at one of the local beach hotels so we were within walking distance and did not have to deal with parking. The first night we arrived we went to the pier area and watched the amazing fireworks. I have never been so close to fireworks before and it was incredible to view them from the beach. However the crowds were overwhelming. To cross the sand dune bridges were ridiculous, the individuals were drunk, smoking, and rude. We waited near the water for the crowds to clear before heading to hotel. The next day (july 4th) we headed to the beach for the day. My boys (10, 12) loved the waves and boogie boarding. However, I found it difficult to explain to them all the beer bongs, smoking, and funny cigarettes going on around us. I understand it was a holiday and you will get all types but this is not a family beach! The only positives were the pier for food/drinks and the ample chair rentals. We visited North Beach one morning and found it a lot less crowded but no real waves. So if you are a young family you may want to try North Beach instead of the pier area.
