Perfect place to take the dogs (on leash) or go with the family. The fort itself is awesome to rome around in and climb on top of. the rolling grass fields around the mote make a good area for picnicking as well. My favorite part of the place is the Cockspur lighthouse trail that is a reasonable walking trail that takes you almost right up to the little light house. Some low tide days even allow you to walk all the way out to it. Watch out for all of the little crabbies though. Something different and fun to do in the area.

“Lots of History and Scars of the Civil War”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013

Very large well preserved Civil War era fort. Well documented descriptions of a major Civil War battle and the different cannon barrel types and when fired the massive damage they did to the walls of the fort. Resulting of the surrend of Fort Pulaski. Of all the forts we visited in Charleston and Savannah Fort Pulaski was by far the most impressive.

“It's OK but not spectacular.”

We decided to visit here on a trip around the Tybee Island area. It's a short drive from the main road to/from Savannah and goes across a pleasant bridge way into the area around the fort. There's a decent sized car park next to the visitor centre. There are a few exhibits in there but nothing too much. The fort itself is next door and the pathway in leads round the moat and in through a gateway; this is very flat and easy to walk. Once inside the fort there are some rooms showing what the place was like - barracks etc but these were shut when we visited. You can go up onto the walls and look one the surrounding area and there's a good view from there. On the ground level there were one or two rooms with a cannon and a pulley system but to be honest after about 30 mins we found we had seen what we needed inside. (Part of the wall and inner defences are closed off so you cannot explore all of it.)
Outside the fort are a couple of shortish trails; we went on the one leading to the headland overlooking Cockspur Lighthouse. This was pleasant, well marked and largely easy to walk. It is a bit enclosed which restricts the view over the marshland quite a bit. If it's a hot and still day the insects will be a problem so I would advise insect spray. The trail is also a there and back affair so you have to simply retrace your steps. Good views at the end though.
On the way back make sure you look at the wall breach and damage from the cannon fire; probably the most interesting bit of the fort.
Would I recommend it? Definitely if you are interested in American and/or military history; it's a good place for a family outing as you can let the kids off the leash.

“A real must see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013 via mobile

We went to the Fort on Veterans day,so it was free admission (normally $5 I think). I am not a big history buff so usually try to get out of things like this with my bf, but he convinced me and I'm glad I went. The fort is so impressive and neat. Great for the whole family, a lot to see and do. Very interesting and interactive, you can climb stairs to the top of the fort and you access the fort from a draw bride over a moat (so cool). They even had a park ranger in a Civil War soldier costume show completed by a musket being fired!

“Worth the drive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2013

The fort is about 13 miles from the center of Savannah. There is a short video and demonstrations during the day. The fort is in great shape and you can see the canons and barracks and other facilities. The grounds are very nice and we saw three deer. Cost is just five dollars.
