Owner description: Fort Pulaski National Monument has one of the best preserved nineteenth century masonry fortifications in the United States. It was also the site of a major artillery duel during the Civil War that saw the first major use of rifled artillery in battle. You can tour the fortress, see living historians bringing the past to life, or watch an artillery demonstration that really immerses visitors with the sights and sounds of conflict. The monument however, is more than just a fort. We have over 5000 acres of pristine saltwater marsh, one of the largest concentrations of marsh along the coast of Georgia. Combine that with miles of trails and you have a great way to get away from our cultural history and surround yourself with the natural beauty of Cockspur Island, the heart of the monument.

The park rangers were very informative about the fort, its history, and particularly what happened during the Civil War with this fort. It doesn't hurt that the fort itself is fairly beautiful with a great view all around it. I learned a lot. I really enjoyed the musket firing demonstration and the random information the man shared about the life of a soldier during those times. We ended up spending 2 1/2 hours there and the only downside was my wife got sunburned because we thought it would only last an hour or so.

Worth a visit if you like civil war history. Very well preserved fort, well cared for. We spent about 2 hours there, could spend more if you want to. Definitely be there for the cannon firing if you can.

Troop 26 visited Savannah over MLK wknd in Jan.'13. (see my other reviews on Old Fort Jackson, Tybee Island Lighthouse, Savannah Ghost Walk and Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum). They shoot cannons most every day so make sure you're there before noon! Our boys had a great time exploring the fort and taking pictures. The fort is well-preserved and very interesting and the museum is also very nice with a short movie to watch while you wait for your tour. You'll need at least two hours if you take a guided tour. We also hiked through the woods to see the lonely little Cockspur Lighthouse. We're scouts, of course we're going to hike! We spent several hours there--more than we budgeted for, so take your time and enjoy it all. You pay at the gate when you go in.

Decided to take a ride to see something different then the typical tourist traps. The park is so very well maintained with the nicest park rangers. No areas that are closed and you can see all the historically areas and experience all the magnificence of the age. Such a hidden jewel of the South.

We took the tour offered by a National Park ranger. Learned a lot about the fort construction and the civil war.
