Owner description: Fort Pulaski National Monument has one of the best preserved nineteenth century masonry fortifications in the United States. It was also the site of a major artillery duel during the Civil War that saw the first major use of rifled artillery in battle. You can tour the fortress, see living historians bringing the past to life, or watch an artillery demonstration that really immerses visitors with the sights and sounds of conflict. The monument however, is more than just a fort. We have over 5000 acres of pristine saltwater marsh, one of the largest concentrations of marsh along the coast of Georgia. Combine that with miles of trails and you have a great way to get away from our cultural history and surround yourself with the natural beauty of Cockspur Island, the heart of the monument.

This is Tybee's best kept secret. It was the first fort to fall during the Civil War (not Ft. Sumter). Got in free because of Veteran's Day. You can park by the small bridge and hike one of the grass trails to the fort, or you can park closer to the fort. Either way, you are in for a treat. Look at the walls where holes still exist from the canonballs. Go inside for a lesson in history that will amaze you. Be sure to get the story behind the architecture. They don't build them like that anymore.

“Such a great surprise!”

Stumbled across this on the way to Savannah and absolutely loved it! People were dressed up in character as Civil War Soldiers. The view is beautiful from the top. Great historical site!

“Amazing Fort, great history!!”

Step back in time where America fought for its freedom from England, then the civil war! What profound stories are to be heard at this enchanting place! Everyone is friendly and so knowledgable, you'll walk away feeling like you're there so many years ago.

“Always a good place to visit”

The park is a good place to go. This time, I walked out to check out the Cockspur Lighthouse. Well worth it at low tide. Veterans Day - free admission with Civil War Re-enactors.

“Great place for history lovers!”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

A great place to check out and spend a good part of the day at between the well put visitors center and musuem, and the walking tour outside. I would suggest hanging around for one of the times they offer a guided tour of the fort, you will not be sorry! The park rangers there are very knowledgeable and courteous to answer any questions you might have. This is a MUST if you are near Savannah GA, or just a lover of history and want to learn more!
