I was really excited to go up into the light house on our trip to Tybee. I was extremely disappointed when we had to pay $3 to park (was fine with that part) but then realized it was $9 a person to walk up in the light house that's only 4 or so stories high! My husband and I are anything but frugal people but we opted to not pay $18 to walk up the 4 flights. If the light house had maybe been bigger (so you could actually see far away and not hardly over the neighborhood surrounding it) then we might have paid to go up. As we were leaving we joked that if people were paying $9 a pop to go up in the light house at least they could make sure the paint wasn't chipping away (there were lots of big spots of missing paint missing).

Brittany,
We appreciate you taking the time to visit the lighthouse on your trip to Tybee Island. I would like to clarify a few things though. The lighthouse is 145 feet tall, has 7 flights of stairs and you are able to, not only see all of Tybee Island, but South Carolina and on a really clear day downtown Savannah. We are currently in the process of fundraising so that we can repaint the lighthouse in the fall. The $9 fee that we charge goes directly into maintaining the site and our site includes much more than just the lighthouse. We have two house museums, several restored support buildings as well as a two story history museum located across the street from the lighthouse. If you are ever on Tybee again please consider another trip to the lighthouse and remember that we have free parking for our guests across from the city lot.

Very interesting climb to the top with a lot of historical facts. There are other buildings such as the caretaker's cottage to visit as well.

Wonderful tour of the light keepers house and it is worth the 178 steps for the view at the top of the lighthouse. Look for the cute cats that live on the grounds. Will visit again.

We took the kids to the Tybee lighthouse museum. It is a combo of the lighthouse and a museum in old Fort Screven. They seemed thoroughly impressed with the lighthouse and grounds. They really liked the old firearms in the museum. LIttle Tip: make sure and park in the parking lot for the museum or you will wind up paying to park. Tybee has parking meters all over the island and you have to figure out how much time you need or you will overpay.
