Review of Castletown Golf Links

Castletown Golf Links
More attraction details
Attraction details
Owner description: Castletown Golf Links is a unique championship golf course situated on the Langness Peninsula in the Isle of Man, surrounded by the sea on all three sides. The Isle of Man occupies just about the same area as Greater London - no more than 33 miles long and less than half that distance at its widest point. At Castletown golf is mostly played well above sea level, with views at every hole of tumbling cliffs, rocky outcrops, sweeping bays and, of course, the ever present sea. Yet the playing conditions are pure links golf - tight-knit, quick draining turf and smooth, fast running greens, with gorse, whispy fescues, and heather defining fairways. The original Castletown Club was formed in 1892 and holes were laid out on the present site in the early 1900's by Old Tom Morris, widely regarded as the modern pioneer of golf. Just a few years before he had confirmed to a potential client: "My fee for laying out a green is One Pound Sterling and travelling expenses", so the exercise was not too costly! Following the Second World War, the course was re-designed and restored by the very well-respected architect, Mackenzie Ross, and it is that course which is in play today. With water on all sides and two magnificent bays carving swathes along each flank, it is a dramatic and wonderfully natural site for a golf course.

“Great cafe bistro with stunning views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2014

As locals we look out for new places to eat... And found a real gem with the bistro in the club house. Husband and wife duo work hard and delivery quality food at a fresh cooked pace. If you are in a rush (and why would you be at the end of a peninsula miles from anywhere?) then sloooow down!

Excellent food, good sized portions nice coffee and tasty pudding. Overall, good quality at a fair price.

Young waiting on staff need a little training ( carrying four glasses by putting your fingers inside is not so good) and maybe some nibbles, or refresh drink orders if you expect people to wait 30+ minutes...

“Nice course and wonderful welcome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

As part of a group of 16 golfers we were made to feel most welcome by all the staff at Castletown Golf Links. The course was a pleasure to play and in good condition considering the time of year and recent appalling weather. Luckily we were blessed with cloudless skies and only a moderate breeze and everyone enjoyed the course immensely.
The clubhouse is modern and well designed and the whole staff were accommodating and good fun to be with. The food we were served was of high quality and volume and we all look forward to returning. We would all particularly like to thank Phil, Johnny and their family for their courtesy and help.

“Course Etiquette investigation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013

I was disturbed to see that a recent visitor had cause to complain about members cutting in front of them and causing them delays. Having investigated this matter further and interviewed the members concerned I can now report as follows.
Firstly, nobody cut in front of them on the 5th hole. Two members who always start early, but don't always put their names on the start sheet, had reached the 5th hole and noticed the visitors who had just teed off on the 4th. As the reviewer says, they are quick players and did not cause a hold up.
Secondly, the three ball who were accused of causing a hold-up are adamant that they did not cause one. They say that they were putting out on the 13th when they were confronted by the visitor. At that point they were five shots ahead of the visitors who would have been playing their approach shots to the par 5 12th. They offered profuse apologies for causing any offence and offered to stand aside and wait for the visitors to catch them up. This offer was refused but their apology was accepted.
As the Press Officer of CGC I confirm on behalf of the Club that we welcome all visitors and wish them to enjoy our wonderful course. We are truly sorry that on this occasion we have failed.
