Just returned from a phenomenal stay in the Beach Club Suites as the Cloister. This place does everything right. In addition to the beautiful setting, the property and all of the facilities are spotless. The staff could not be friendlier or more accommodating. What a great value for the cost! We traveled with our children, ages 14, 12 and 8, and another family with children of similar ages. Both children and adults were equally impressed. We have stayed at many upscale resorts including, most recently, the Ritz Reserve at Dorado Beach and the Elbow Beach Resort (run by the Mandarin chain). The General Managers of those resorts, which charge three and four times as much, could learn many things from Mr. Riess and his wonderful staff at this well-managed, spectacular spot. Things not to miss on the resort: Bingo, the spa, a beach horseback ride, shooting (we did a private lessons), bagpipes at s'mores at the gorgeous Lodge and jeep train shelling. Things that were not quite up to the "extraordinary" standards set by the other activities: archery, "private yacht" and most of the resort restaurants (with the exception of the Georgian Room, which we skipped). Things to do off resort: visit lovely St. Simons. Take a dolphin boat tour, eat almost anywhere! We had excellent meals at Haylards, Bernie's Red Barn, Blackwater Grill, and Southern Soul (do NOT miss this place). We also arranged to have a goft cart delivered to the resort for our use. High Tide Cart Rentals in St. Simons. Top to bottom, a must-visit family resort. We will return and recommend highly to all.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with children, the beach club suites are the place to stay. The rooms are very...

All of the positive reviews are right on -- this resort is spectacular. Here are some additional trip tips:

Visit The Lodge (part of the Cloister property but 6 miles away from main hotel). Absolutely beautiful setting. Oak Room for dinner, drinks on golf course, bagpiper playing at sunset, s'mores for kids every night. A must do -- just beautiful.

Visit the neighboring town St Simons for activities, bar/restaurants and to get a local feel -- cute town, trolley tours, dolphin boat tours, very good bars/restaurants.

The Spa is fantastic.

Archery for kids was not too impressive.

Shooting school was one I the highlights of trip -- we did clay pidgeon shooting (with kids) and it was great -- adults and kids alike loved it -- a lot of fun.

From the moment we stepped off the plane in Brunswick, the pampering started. For $65 total we were picked up at the airport in a Lincoln Town Car and whisked away to our destination-The Cloister. Although we arrived early they accommodated us with a early check in and we were on the beach by 1:30! We stayed in the Ocean View Villas. The view of the ocean was superb. This was most important to me so I was thrilled. The only downside to the Ocean View Villas is that they are a 10-12 minute walk to the Beach Club Villas where the pools and beach umbrellas are. We could have called for a ride on a golf cart at any time but we ended up enjoying walking on the beach back and forth each day. At night we would take the 10 walk to the main house to eat. The one time we called and asked for a ride to the main house we were picked up promptly. I can't say enough about how friendly the staff is. Everyone was so genuinely kind and caring, wanting to make sure we were having a great time. We spent half our time in the (free) beach chairs and umbrella set up. It was very peaceful and you can order drinks and food right from your chair. The tip is included which made things much simpler for us. The Snack bar was delicious. I highly recommend the hot dog. It was great! The other half of the time we spent at the Adult Pool. It was like being in heaven. We were escorted to our seats with a chair cover and towels and immediately given a large cup of ice water with your choice of a slice of fruit in it. This was filled all throughout the day. The wait staff was always right there if we wanted to order anything. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. It was our 30th Wedding anniversary and they gave us a bottle of champagne in our room, which was a nice touch. We continued to receive a comp glass of champagne at one dinner and a comp dessert at another. Everyone seemed to know it was our anniversary! Coming from Atlanta, this was the perfect place for a special occasion. It was a 45 minute plane ride to Brunswick and a 20 minute drive to the Cloister from the airport. I'm looking forward to our next special occasion because I'll definitely be back!

Room Tip: Rooms at the Ocean View Villas are a walk to everything but its very quiet there and the views of th...

This place is not only exquisite, but has the best staff and customer service I have ever encountered on a trip. From the time I arrived until my departure, I was made to feel like I was the only guest in the hotel. The service was that good. When you are traveling alone, as I was, that is saying a lot. I plan to make this my "go to" spot for R&R and am so glad it is only a two hour plane ride away.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Ocean Villas. I had an expansive view of the ocean and a short walk to their privat...

We honeymooned here eighteen years ago and finally returned this past weekend for a delayed May anniversary celebration. We stayed in the main hotel in a quiet room, number 45. The room was fabulous - beautifully furnished, roomy, with plenty of storage and a porch with a view of the river.

The staff was professional, friendly and very accommodating. We had late dinner reservations the first night and the front desk staff retrieved a cookie tray for us, even though the afternoon snacks in the solarium had just been cleared. Coffee is also served in the solarium in the mornings from 6-10:00 am, pastries from 6-8:00 am.

The reservations staff recommended Colt & Allison for dinner and it was exceptional in terms of food and service. The steaks, Vidalia onion soup, potato rolls, Caesar salad (made table-side), and sides of corn and spinach were all remarkable.

There were many families there at the same time for school vacations, but we spent time at the adult pool one afternoon and the spa pools the next day. The adult pool was not quiet, though, as a wedding party had rented the cabanas and they were playing loud music. Think Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, etc. In retrospect, I should have said something to the staff because I wasn't the only one irritated.

We did the Plantation Supper Saturday night. We had done it years ago during our May honeymoon and remembered how good it was. The food was delicious and plentiful - salads, fried chicken, flank steak, Brunswick stew, sides and desserts including Sea Island cobbler with ice cream. There was a kids buffet, with chicken fingers, fruit and broccoli. It was a great family friendly event with live music, but I would not recommend it for a couples weekend during the summer.

Probably our best service of all was during breakfast in the Georgian Room. We ordered pretty simple things off of the menu, but even the biscuits and house made peach jam were wonderful. And the art work in the dining room and throughout the main hotel corridors are beautiful, museum quality pieces. If you have time, I highly recommend walking around to see some of them.

One of the highlights was finding our honeymoon picture from 1995! The front desk staff showed us where they are kept and we turned right to it. Even with so many kids there, we were able to have a great anniversary weekend. If you are planning a couples getaway rather than a family vacation, I would let the staff know when booking the reservation and they can steer you towards more couples-friendly activities and dining venues.

Room Tip: Room 45 in the main hotel was very quiet and not very far from the morning coffee in the solarium.

Sea Island is always one of the best spots for families. Didn't play golf this trip but the facilities are second to none. Beach club is incredible and the Junior Staff appeared to be on their game (disclosure: I'm a former Junior Staffer). The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially the guys working hard on chairs and umbrellas on the beach. One complaint is that the grounds were not clean. I was shocked that there were wrappers and trash on the beach every morning and much of the areas around the pool were not picked up. The hotel can't be blamed for messy guests but seeing the same trash every day is the hotel's fault. Overall, Sea Island remains one of the most unique, relaxing, and fun family trips we take. Oh yea, the food is always top notch of course.

Thank you so much for your comments. It’s always wonderful to have a former Junior Staffer back with us, and even better to know that the visit was so enjoyable. I have shared with our Operations team your comment regarding that we needed to do a better job of tidying up while you were here. We look forward to having your return to Sea Island, maybe for the Junior Staff reunion in September
