I had not been back to the Cloisters in many years and this visit was like a warm bath, even though the weather was not as warm as we had hoped! We visited with a family of 10 and 3 generations. I cannot comment on the hotel accommodations as we belong to a membership organization called Exclusive Resorts and stayed in one of their spectacular 4 BR homes that is immediately adjacent to the Cloisters property (literally a 1 minute walk).

We ranged in age from 3 - 68 and there were SO many wonderful activities for our family that it was impossible to do them all -- but we tried! We had 4 little boys with us, ages 3-9, and they loved it all, from golf to "shooting school" (I think this was the favorite) to a fishing expedition, to shuffleboard, tennis, bikeriding, jigging at the plantation dinner, the children's dance party, to the pool, to the beach where we flew kites - it's hard to remember all the activities. There is a "camp" for children which we did one day and they loved that too. Bingo night was a family event; you have to dress up and it is A TRIP. Hilarious, fun and wonderful even if you don't win.

The staff was exceptionally attentive and helpful and the hotel itself is spectacularly beautiful - not in a new mega-mansion kind of way, but in a very organic, "isn't this perfect for this site" kind of way. It has a large capacity, including a convention center, but gives the feel of a small boutique hotel.

With little children, we didn't avail ourselves often of the hotel restaurants, but the ones we tried were great (River Bar and casual cafeteria-style for families on the beach) and I understand the Georgian Room is over the top. Next trip.

It IS expensive. Everything is ala carte, so almost all activities have a cost to them - but it is not unreasonably expensive.

In summation, I recommend it highly as a destination for families of all ages - even the teenagers looked happy!

It is in the south, so dressing up is in order for some of the events. But our little guys felt important!

Room Tip: Can't help much since we didn't do this, but the river views were pretty.

very well earned!
We have just returned from a fantastic stay at The Cloister and enjoyed absolutely everything.
The staff is phenomenal, the property is spectacular.
My wife and I already have a different trip planned but have decided to change the destination so we can return to Sea Island again.

Lovely, lovely, lovely
We recently attended a meeting at The Cloister on Sea Island and although I have been a guest on this property before, I had forgotten how lovely The Cloister is. Friends of ours who also attended the meeting agreed with us that we could not think of a more beautiful property even though many of us have been to wonderful places around the world.
The Beach Club is a family paradise from the candy shop to the game room to the many pools, children’s playground and, of course, the Atlantic Ocean. The service is superb and friendly; the grounds are indescribably beautiful. The Cloister offers an array of activities and a superb Spa experience. In short, this is quite possibly the only property at which we have stayed that we could honestly say was 5 star, 5 diamond or whatever the highest rating could possibly be.
The one caveat, of course, is the price. The Cloisters is not cheap which makes it rather exclusive and not a vacation that everyone will be able to afford.
If you are, however, ever able to visit this wonderful place, do yourself a favor and walk around the entire property inside and out. There are gardens, fountains, and a beautiful solarium where you can get coffee and pastries in the morning. There are hidden little corners with beautiful artwork and exquisite furniture. The Georgian dining room is lovely to see, even if you don’t eat there, as are a number of lounges, libraries and outside spaces. You will feel like a member of the wealthy caste of Americans from an earlier century and you will wish you could vacation here for a month every year. I know that we will try to get back.

This resort was amazing. On our golf cart tour we viewed the many presidential oaks that had been planted to commemorate visits of presidents and other heads of state dating back to 1928, the beach club, spa, chapel, fishing dock, etc. and learned of guided walks and various classes that are available.

Room Tip: prepare to be pampered!

drove a hour and a half with my fiance and mother to look at the cloister as a wedding venue, although it was extremely beautiful I would never go back again. Had an appointment with one of the wedding coordinators at 1:30..arrived early and was told they would inform her of our arrival..well 45 mintues later and having to ask 3 more people to find her for us, a man comes back and says she said the appointment was at 2 and someone else would be helping us. What was extremely rude was the fact that we arrived 30 mintues early, why didnt someone tell us about the mix up with appointment times and why did it take us 45 mintues to finally be helped???? Not to mention my mother called as we were leaving the resort to leave her a very polite message expressing her irritation with the way we were treated while we were there, and we have yet to receive a call back about their mistake. Will never go back nor do they deserve our money...

This is a very special and memorable destination that competes well against the finest resorts in the world. If you love architecture and traditional interior design, you will love the decorating details, the quality of the furniture, and the elegant feel of the lobby and dining rooms. Even indoor pool in the fitness center, and the outdoor pool areas were done with craft and attention to detail.

If you love landscape architecture, the same is true. Around every corner is another carefully designed collection of trees and flowering shrubs. The roads and sidewalks were constructed with paving stones and stone tiles and again, there's always one more little detail to notice. So much artistry.

The staff has the professionalism you would expect, but without the formality. There's a southern charm in their manner that puts you at ease immediately, and we found this to be true universally.

This is a great place for families with teenagers. The beach house has multiple pools, restaurants and snack shops, and a game room. Internet is free and available everywhere wirelessly. The beach itself is wide and goes forever - a great place for a morning run or finding sand dollars. There are lots of activities including fishing and biking. Dinner in the restaurants in the main building might require teens to dress up a bit, but teens were always made to feel welcome.

Of course, this all comes at a cost and every meal, every activity is much more expensive than it would be anywhere else. Clearly, this kind of destination is not for everyone. But if you are going to pay for a first class destination, you can feel comfortable that the Cloister will deliver on that expecation.

While on our trip we were fortunate to stay here as well as The Lodge and it would be so hard for me to say which I preferred. Both impeccable staff, beauty and comfort. Our room at The Cloister was at the very end of the property right on the ocean. Very quiet and large with a deck. The beach was far away from the main building where there was much more activity and children. When we went out to the beach and across the dunes, it felt like we were alone on this gorgeous stretch of land. Our beds were beyond comfortable and I didn't want to even get out of it in the morning! The room at The Lodge had this incredible feeling of being in place where dignitaries would stay (in fact they have!). Eat at Colt and Alison too for a very special experience. I can't wait to return!!
