If God were to take a vacation, He would stay at the Giessbach, sit on the patio, and admire his handy-work. It is that beautiful. If one appreciates natural beauty, good service, and a well-kept historical hotel, then the Giessback is the perfect fit.

We stayed a family of 5 at this hotel on July this year. We wanted to stay at a unique hotel and this is the place.
As you enter the hotel you fill like traveling in time and the décor is wonderful.
We had 2 great rooms. From one of them you could see the waterfall - Was great.
The staff was very smiling and friendly. The hotel location is wonderful and the atmosphere is relaxing. I recommend going up the mountain and looking down at the hotel to see how it blends with nature.
Everything was perfect including the bio swimming pull.
On the 3rd floor is a very nice bar that you can enjoy for free.
The only regret is that we stayed for only two nights….
The next time will be in the neighborhood we'll definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms located on the waterfall side

We stayed here two nights and loved the treat. The décor and service are elegant and we felt special. Our room was beautiful and quiet. The breakfast buffet was amazingly wonderful with lots of variety in both hot and cold dishes. We made reservations for our evening meals in the restaurant and that food was also very good.

The location is impressive as the falls are visible from lots of different eating locales. We enjoyed several hikes from the hotel. Since we had a rail pass, we also hiked along the lake to a nearby town and then took the boat back to the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay here and do not hesitate to recommend it, even though it was rather expensive.

Some years ago I'd enjoyed a novel translated from the German called 'The Perfect Waiter'. Much of it was a flashback to the 1930s when the narrator worked as a waiter at the "Grand Hotel, Giessbach", collecting guests from boats down at the landing stage and transporting them and their luggage up the mountainside on the hotel's funicular railway. To my surprise, I discovered that this romantic hotel had once actually existed, as described, and moreover it still did, according to their website. There were beautiful, if improbable, views of the hotel and Lake Brienz, which it overlooks. My partner and I decided to book there and then, and we had no regrets.
While some sensible modernisation has occurred, it still retains the appearance and atmosphere of a late 19th century grand country retreat, but the atmosphere is relaxed and fairly friendly. We will never forget the moment we were shown our room - what a spectacular view of the lake! Breakfast was taken each morning on the terrace alongside the celebrated waterfall. All this was helped by the fact that we had 5 days of perfect July weather.
Travelling each day mostly by funicular and boat was a great part of the holiday, and being Swiss, transport ran like clockwork.
The hotel is understandably not cheap, and the elaborate dinner we had on our first night was welcome but rather expensive. We had a nice meal on the bar terrace the next night, but relented on the last evening and had the restaurant set menu, better value.
The only minor blemishes were an almost comically bad waiter on our second meal, and we'd had a distinctly frosty welcome from the Maitre D on the first. Generally the staff were helpful and pleasant, particularly the young barman. A lovely experience - and the bonus of hearing little English spoken during our stay!

Room Tip: We chose the option of a lake view (as opposed to waterfall view) and were glad we did.

We took the boat from brienz to giessbach and took the train up the small hill. We made reservations for lunch which have us a nice table. The menu choice was nice Swiss food and a 3 course menu for 36chf. White table cloths grandeur entrance. If you want to step back in time come here. The only down side is the waiter did not match the 4 stars. I never expect good service in Switzerland, but had hopes up today. He poured white wine into the water glass, dribbled white wine each time he poured - he did not know how to pour a simple glass of wine. Besides that- it is lovely and a nice day trip if you have people visiting that are not very mobile. The final bill for 4 with wine was 207chf.

This hotel is set in a lovely grounds/park with the waterfall outside. The hotel itself is like an old victorian lady - she is refined and relaxed in herself in the knowledge of her grandeur. The service was really good and the food in the restaurant was very nice - both the buffet breakfast and the main evening restaurant. The staff were most helpful. The only bad thing was the beds - they were so hard that it was like sleeping on the floor (i guess some might like this!)

The hotel itself is 5 stars all around. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and nice. The restaurant is delicious and on the fancy side and the wait staff was incredible. Breakfast which was included also 5 stars. The room we stayed in was on the small side but we weren't picky.

I would like to give the hotel 4 1/2 stars and I would take half a star off for the inflexible schedule of the shuttle bus. I understand that there is a public bus and ferry and the hotel's bus is coordinated BUT what gives with the last bus being 6:30pm? If you want to have dinner in Brienz for a change rather than the hotel's restaurant you have 2 options. One is to take a taxi for about 100 francs or, call the hotel to pick you up for 12 francs per person (no public bus or ferry!) We called them to pick us up at the train station at 8:30pm and were charged. I think a lot of people would appreciate the last bus to be 8 or 8:30pm to enjoy Brienz for a bit more time.

Here's a great tip- if you are going hiking and want to take a picnic, the hotel has a fabulous packed lunch option for a great price. It's a sandwich, fruit, drink and dessert at a price you won't see anywhere else in town! Just order it at reception before 9pm the night before and they have it ready for you in the morning!

Bottom line: beautiful hotel, incredible staff.
