“Travel back in time”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

We just returned from a 2 night stay at Grandhotel Giessbach. After having celebrated our 10th anniversary at their Park Restaurant 5 years ago, my husband decided to surprise me with a stay there for our 15th anniversary.

It was PERFECT!!!!!!!! Everything from the breath-taking views (of the lake, Alps and waterfall) to the antique furniture, from the complimentary coffee bar to the gourmet restaurants classifies this hotel as an absolute gem!

The staff was extremely friendly, accommodating and attentive; after being made aware that we were celebrating an anniversary extra details were added to our make our dinner table as beautifully decorated as on a wedding day!

The hotel was built around 1875 - so don't expect an modern design hotel - but isn't lacking in modern comforts!

The location is great for hikes of different lengths and is the perfect starting point for outings in the Bernese Alps or in the areas of Brienz or Interlaken.

This place is an absolute MUST if you are in Switzerland!!!

Room Tip: we stayed in 119 - had a balcony and an excellent view!!!

If you enjoy hiking, biking and nature this is the place to visit. I am in my early 50s and first visited Giessbach 30+ years ago. It is a timeless monument, beautifully maintained, with renovated rooms. Service is spectacular by the most attentive Swiss trained staff. Spent 3 nights in third floor room facing the cascade and slept with windows open to the constant peaceful water fall background noise. I would highly recommend making this historical monument part of your destination trips during your next visit to Europe or Switzerland. Nearby Interlaken offers a lot of sporty attractions including river rafting (I recommend Alpin Raft with excellent service / experience). Also worth mentioning is the eco friendly swimming pool (plants growing in the pool replace the need for chemicals).

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view of lake or cascade

It's hard to pick the most amazing thing about this hotel -- is it the fantastic vista of the crystal blue lake? The equally beautiful view of the mountains? The awesomely huge, gorgeous waterfall a mere 200 feet away? Or the hotel itself, a classy, lovely place with plenty of personality and ambience? Sadly, we only got to stay here one night, but luckily, that's all it took to find out it's all of the above.

Our room was nice and spacious, though we didn't have much of a view. Try and get a lakeside/waterfall view if possible.

The staff is friendly, and the restaurant has delicious food. They even gave us English menus although we didn't ask for them (all of the staff we encountered spoke fluent English, German & French, as per the norm in Switzerland). Although this place isn't cheap, it's certainly worth what you pay for the location and atmosphere. Be sure to check out the waterfall up close while you're there; it's a short walk from the hotel and absolutely worth the time.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a view of the lake and/or waterfall.

You can see many fantastic pictures of this place, but until you arrive there you will be really amazed. What a location! What a setting! With incredible views of the lake and surrounded by mountains and lush green forest, this historic place is like no other. Staying here is a memorable experience without a doubt.

The hotel is very elegant and nicely preserved, with a great restaurant and bar. The rooms are simple but very comfortable. I would strongly recommend to explore the hotel, there are rooms with incredible works of art and vintage photos. Also, if you go up the stairs to the top floor, there is a nice lounge area where you can get free coffee, tea, and juices.

From the hotel you can hike an easy and short trail that follows a beautiful waterfall. The views from here are quite spectacular too. Everyone at the hotel made sure we enjoyed our stay. We hope to visit again!

The scenery and setting is unsurpassed. The historic building has been restored beautifully. Rooms were comfortable, staff was helpful, and dining was excellent. If there is any drawback, it is that the location is not the best for access to other attractions. Getting to the town or rail station requires a taxi or boat ride; although both are short rides.

We went to the Giessbach in May, with Swiss friends and two five-year old twin boys. Our friends live in the Geneva area and had found this hotel.

We arrived in the rain, and walked the long walk down from the carpark with our bags in tow. Of course, we realized at the bottom that we could have driven right up to unload. Oh well. The hotel is fabulously situated on Lake Brienz, and looks down the lake toward Interlaken, over the water. Since we saw it both in rain and sun, we got to experience a range of views associated with the hotel, with was just great. It is in the "grand old dame" genre of hotels--large open spaces, grand stair cases, many terraces from which to take in the view. Our friend was saddened that our rooms did not overlook the lake--we were thrilled. As stunning as the lake views are, we (being from arid San Diego CA) found the thundering waterfall on the forested cliffside just outside our window even more glorious. The room was extremely comfortable, with a small sink in the room as well as a good sized full bath. AND THAT VIEW!! We chose not to eat in the most expensive restaurant as the menu was not family friendly (in cost or choices), but ate inside at the terrace restaurant. I thought it was wonderful. Some of the items were merely good, but some were absolutely best in class, and they were extremely kind to two small boys--bringing them spaghetti to eat (while two of our party ate their way through a lengthy tasting menu), as well as small toys to keep them engaged. By the time we were ready for our main courses and dessert, the boys were done and their father took them upstairs and put them to bed before returning to the table. I am sure we were at that table (again with an incredible view of the waterfall) for a good 3.5 hours that night. Service was nothing but kind, and the food made us happy. The next morning we all walked up to the top of the falls, a pretty walk, around and under the waterfall, before breakfast. That was a terrific buffet that my husband and I thought was one of the best we ever had. Everything was fresh, plentiful, beautifully displayed and delicious. Then, the boys ran down to the lake while my husband and I enjoyed the funicular running between the lakeside and the hotel. All in all, it was an unusual and beautiful experience. I note that some other reviewers discussed the prevalence of tour activity. That does not surprise me, and certainly would distract from the immediate contact with nature this grand old hotel offers. I would suggest you plan to visit in a somewhat off season, as we were lucky to do, and take advantage of the hours before and after the buses and ferries arrive, when you will feel yourself almost alone in a fairy tale spot.
