“This location is alittle off”
Reviewed April 17, 2012

I'm from Greenville and out location is 1/2 this size. The service was slow even though it was Saturday and not a full resturant. Anyone who eaten here knows there is not alot of service from staff needed so keep this in mind while I'm harping on this fact.

“Good concept, flawed execution”
Reviewed December 24, 2011

This place can be inconsistent, and if compared to the chain average as a whole I'd have to rate it a laggard rather than a leader. They're mostly trying to do the right things, but often execution is a problem.

I've found service to be wildly inconsistent, with wait times to have tea or water or other drinks refilled (best to order water to have a fallback) good on one day and terrible the next. It's best to avoid peak lunchtimes, as this location is in the middle of an area full of office buildings. But service inconsistency has also reached to less-crowded times, and it seems there's a fair amount of turnover (i.e. not seeing the same people that often).

Another problem seems to be too much odor at times in the meat section. To their credit they offer meats in tubs at below room temperature rather than the frozen beef/chicken "chips" long offered by independent places. But I think the rule as applied to grocery store meat or seafood departments is that you're not supposed to smell it that much, and on that count this place seems to have good and bad days. Another chain, b.d.'s (mostly in the midwest and Florida) handles this part better.

Very small serving spoons at the spice section are a bit nanny-state, but I'm sure there are novices who don't realize that those can quickly make a dish too hot. Instead of having people mix ladles of things like vinegar, cooking sherry or soy sauce they have pre-made sauces to pour into a cup on the side and have it poured on (common across the chain). Being able to drop the bowl, get a number and have the server deliver it to your table is also a good feature across the GG chain, though at peak times it can't prevent slower service or a backup if the grill itself is overloaded. At least you can spend more time in your seat rather than standing and waiting.

This location also wasn't honoring the national Genghis Grill Entertainment coupons. While standard fine print for anything like that would allow a location not to "participate," it's usually not a good idea not to. The management and home office could look to TGI Friday's for a good model of consistency and communication with Entertainment-book promotions (Entertainment hardly being a fly-by-night operation, as they've been around for decades).

There's also Khan's Klub, a card-based bowl-counting endeavor likely tied to the cash-register system (Lenny's Subs has a very similar system). It's not as advanced at incentivizing visits that wouldn't otherwise take place (Friday's is more state-of-the-art there), but it's something and you have to walk before you run.

Overall, the Genghis Grill chain has a lot of good ideas. I've been going to MBBQ places all over the country since first discovering it at Westwood Village in L.A. in 1989. I'd still give b.d.'s a slight edge in overall quality (though there are no b.d.'s in Atlanta), but would rate Genghis Grill - as a chain - above others like Hu Hot or Chang's, and the GG chain is moving into places like Atlanta that haven't previously had many MBBQ places.

It's a good concept, but replicating it on the ground is only as good as the people. Hopefully this location can settle down to be more consistent, as novelty gets you only so far and that will fade.
