Village Inn and Pub
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 30, 2006

In many ways, the Village Inn and Pub on St. Simmons Island typifies what I woud consider to be the ideal hotel: independent, full of charm, in a beautiful environment, luxurious rooms, nice pool, all without pretention and exorbitant prices.

Walking distance to great restaurants and the waterfront was great as well.

The downsides:

the "pub" part of the hotel, which was quite noisy at night, where I am sure the hotel makes a bit of dough from the locals who congregate there.

The ash trays scattered EVERYWHERE, that encourage people to smoke, literally right outside your window.

Noise from the pool area until 10pm.

Very lousy coffee and breakfast--if you're going to bother serving it, at least use locally baked breads and pastries, and do a better job with the coffee!
Tip: great coffee house one block away, opens at 7 am, as well as several wonderful breakfast options--all open at 7 am, 1-2 blocks away.

That being said, I would actually stay here again--hopefully next time with some changes!!

We stayed three nights right before Christmas in a standard room with two double beds on the second floor. Room was nicely decorated a la Restoration Hardware decor (except the color green on the walls was a bit institutional in nature).
Everything was new and nice and excellent beds. Nice touch of providing waffle-cotton robes. Good heating system for this chilly time of year. Bathroom small but adequate. Nightimes were noisy late with people out by the pool talking on their cell phones (people from the so-called PUB, which was more of a small noisy sports bar.) Room was not made up one day, and a flustered and apologetic staff made quick amends. Atmosphere was Old South romantic; especially the landscaping. Continental breakfast was basic and coffee was surprisingly good. Excellent location for a stroll into the village for shopping and out on the pier and lighthouse. Overall, I would go there again. Good value.

I have had the pleasure of staying at The Village Inn on numerous occasions, for business purposes. I would recommend this inn to anyone staying on the island. The location cannot be beat... just steps from all the amenities of the village and a couple of blocks from the pier. The setting is beautiful and the rooms are clean and decorated with taste.

I have stayed in multiple rooms (from the standard to deluxe) and noise only seems to be a problem on Saturday nights. But, for the convenience of being in the village... it gets a bit crowded on weekends. Even the smallest rooms are comfortable and the larger rooms are an added bonus. The breakfast is above and beyond your standard continental breakfast and is available early (which is great for people traveling for work).

The best part of your stay, though, is the staff. The innkeeper is unparalleled and the support staff go out of their way to provide even the smallest requests. (I had a lizard in my room that was removed immediately! :-) ) If you're wanting a unique stay that is convenient and way above the norm, than this is the place to stay.

This little Inn was just about as good as it can get. The rooms are beautiful, the staff is wonderful, the location is convenient to stores, restaurants, the lighthouse and the pier. The grounds of this hotel are lush, with every shade of green that can be grown. Everything about this place says "relax, you're on vacation."

The only drawbacks are the room sizes, I went with the mid level room and it was a bit cramped, and the street noises. Granted, St. Simons Island is a quiet little place, but one Harley going down the road is enough. Still- not a big deal.

The breakfast was fantatsic. It was a large spread complete with a hot waffle iron and batter in cups for you to make your own waffles.

Next year we're going with the deluxe room.

Stayed at the Village Inn and Pub for three nights. It is in a great location within walking distance of the pier, shopping and restaraunts. Service was good enough although we didn't really require much assistance. The rooms are very clean,well-furnished and comfortable. We stayed in a room that was overlooking the pool which was NOT good. These rooms are literally 25 feet from the pool and although it is situated in a well-manicured garden area, the noise from kids and adults swimming is very loud. Anyone who talks in the pool area can be heard in all the rooms. Plus, the Pub stays open till 130-2am. The pub is just across the pool(so 35 feet from the rooms) and if anyone decides to go outside for a drink, you will hear every word they say, until the wee hours of the morning. With the rooms so close to the pool/garden area, the privacy factor is very low-unless you can seal the blinds completely and hang a towel over the window in the door, anyone and everyone staying at the Inn can see directly into your room. If you are going to stay here, and it is a very clean and nicely decorated Inn, I would recommend staying in a room NOT on the poolside.

We stayed here in November for two nights. The inn is nice and the rooms are lovely. However, the walls are extremely thin. Request a room in the front building that has only one unit on each floor. I think it is a king suite. We moved to that room the second night and it was fabulous. The location is great. Be sure to walk down to the pier and have lunch at the 4th of May Cafe.
