We were on St. Simons Island for a family gathering and decided to see some of the sites. It was a nice, historical site that had activities to interest the kids and was nearby.

This fort is the British rival of the Spanish Castillo in St Augustine. While St Augustine went on to be a prosperous city and preserved the Castillo, Fort Frederica all but disappeared as St Simon became a backwater sleepy town. Even so, the grounds have been preserved as a lovely park with its tale to tell. Plenty of shade for hot sunny days and a nice indoor short film to make sense of it all.

I never knew about this fort. It was part of the 13 colonies' frontier and supported a small town from the 1730's to the 1790's. The staff was friendly and obviously invested in the history of the place. You could also walk around and see numerous documented ruins and get a real sense of colonial frontier life.

This was a wonderful place to visit. The fort is on the ground as well as the layout of how the town was. The museum had hands on exhibits for the kids. We really enjoyed our time here.

There isn't much of the fort that's still around, but we enjoyed our visit. We learned quite a bit from the informational video at the parks service before going to explore on our own. Even without the original buildings, the grounds were beautiful. We even found an old musket ball during our walk and informed the ranger of its location so it could be catalogued.
