We visited Fort Frederica on St. Simon's island as a sort of relaxing way to stroll pretty country-side but found it to be a very interesting historic monument. We watched the film which was very interesting and then toured the gorgeous grounds. The feeling of the history of the place was nearly palpable. I learned alot and enjoyed doing it! Would recommend this stop if you have an extra hour or so.

come take a step back in time with old relics of Fort Frederica ..The mud and seashell fort was built to protect St. Simon s during the revolutionary war against the enemies who tried to take the Great Nation away from us.

This is a National Mounument that is not as well known or advertised as it should be.
it includes a visitor center with exhibits and a very good movie on the site as well as the site itself.
Ft. Frederica was set up by James Olgethorpe as a southern outpost for the colony of Georgia to ward off the Spanish in Florida and lay claim to the 'disputed lands'. At its height in the 1740's their were over 1,000 people in this bustling town that would have looked like an English village. All that remains now is the foundation ruins of many of the homes and businesses and aa couple of structure ruins. From this site the Spanish were defeated on St. Simons Island and ensured that the Southern part of the continent would be English in nature. The grounds are really beautiful and the information panels and excavated items really help to bring to life what it would be like to be in this remote area. Well worth the $3 entrance fee.

This was a real treat! The gentleman volunteer manning the entrance desk just insisted we go in and watch the film, which we did. We were so glad we took the time, because we both learned a lot and my husband who grew up in Georgia had to study Georgia history but found out interesting facts. Then when you go out and can see where the houses were and can see the size of the foundations it just becomes very clear what our ancestors went through to found this country!
