“Beautiful Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2011

Even if you are not interested in history you will enjoy a visit to this area. Just walking around the old town site is a treat with all the large old oak trees we took lots of pictures. I would suggest you view the 20 min. movie in the visitor center prior to starting your walk. It does a good job of explaning this historic location. If you are interested in Charles and John Wesley's connection to Fort Frederica they are not mentioned in the movie. When I asked the park ranger about this she gave me a nice information sheet on the Wesley's, this sheet is not out on the racks so make sure you ask for it.

“Another hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2011

This is a great place to get a good history lesson on the founding of Georgia. If you are interested in archeology, this is an excellent place to see the results of this type of work. I came away with an interest to read about General Olgelthorpe. If you are interested in John Wesley, nearby, you can see a monument the commemorates where he preached his first sermon in Georgia.

“Nice way to spend a few hours on St. Simons”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2010

We had good weather when we visited, so this probably helped our experience immensly but we enjoyed seeing the ruins of the fort and town. We also learned a lot as well. We are not from the area and had no idea a battle had been fought between the British and the Spanish on the Island.

It is hard to believe today but Fort Frederica and this Island was a major British military outpost. The result of the battle was that the St. Mary's River became the border between the British and Spanish and remains as the border between Georgia and Florida today.

Admission is still $3.00/person and we watched the 23 minute film in the visitors center before exploring the grounds. I highly recommend seeing the film before you walk around the grounds. It will really help you understand what you are seeing.

As others have said, there are only pieces of what once remained but you can definitely tell there was a village and fort located here and there are lots of signs to explain the excavations.

It actually is quite peaceful to walk around the oaks and Spanish moss and just take in the beautiful grounds.

“Georgia History to experience”

Not a huge site but an insightful look into the very beginning of Georgian history. Nice artifacts, well maintained site. Lots of wildlife along with the sights.
