“Wedding Night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2011

I can't believe I have not written a review before now. My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night last December. It was a very last minute wedding, so we were very happy to have a room right on the ocean with a little patio. It was freezing outside (literally!) We were greeted with a very sweet note and a bottle of champagne.

The beach here is not the best, but I would rather find a more secluded spot anyway. I have been staying here off and on for 20+ years and love the lobby and style of the hotel.

Room Tip: I have always stayed in the main hotel, and every one has been great.

I just completed my second trip there. What a delightful, charming hotel with a terrific staff. The service details are comparable to 5 star expectations . . . the cost is not. My first trip there was with a large group. Their attention to detail for the guest rooms, the meetings, and the food and beverage service was the best I have ever experienced. This last visit was with a few friends. I recommend this hotel for any occasion.

This resort is a great price value. It sits right on the ocean wall. You can listen to the waves all night long. Our favorite was the ironed sheets and the down pillows.

Cooked to order omlettes for breakfast and a great IPA beer in the bar. The staff has that Southern hospitality, which makes you feel like you are at home.

I look forward to returning and also having BBQ at Southern Soul (one of the finest BBQ joints in the South).

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean front room in the main building.

Had the pleasure of staying here for a night--great location--right on the shore. Beautiful sunrise and great ocean breeze. The staff was most accommodating and the facilities and food--outstanding. Would make a point of staying here next time I return to the area!

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the ocean--its worth the extra $$'s

I was a little concerned with some of the reviews of the King and Prince. To be safe, the best building seems to be the Oceanfront or a condo. We had a room on the 3rd floor with an excellent view, especially at the special Veteran's weekend rate of $111.11/night. The seafood buffet on Friday was disappointing, but the breakfast buffet was fine. You can play 18 holes at the Hampton course for $50/person if you are over 50 - beautiful course with 4 holes in the marsh area. Make sure you take the trolley tour of the island, well worth the $22 for a 90 minute history tour of the island. An also must see is Jekyll Island - take a self-guided walking tour around the Jekyll Island Hotel historic area and see how the other half - "Men with Means" - lived in the early 1900's. The King and Prince is the only oceanfront hotel in St Simons but we warned, there is not much beach at high tide.

We recently stayed at the King and Prince in an oceanfront room. Our room was spacious, the beds were comfortable, and the room was clean. Overall the staff was friendly, however the one breakfast we had at the hotel was disappointing. The fruit was old, the muffins were tasteless, and the pastries at the coffee shop were 2-3 days old! The hotel's grounds are well manicured and clean, but the lobby interior could use a makeover. Daily walks on the beautiful beach are worth the trip.

As a native Georgian, I will admit we don't have the best beaches in America, but of what we have, St. Simons Island is about the best. And the King and Prince is among the best on the island. Yeah, it can show a little wear around the edges; heck, it's been there for over 75 years. But it is overall well-managed, well-maintained and friendly. I dare say that if you polled the state of Georgia, King & Prince would be the favorite coastal destination. It's that once-a-year trip to the beach we make. And perhaps it is that long-standing relationship we have with this hotel that allows us to overlook what others might criticize. I will nick it's "value" rating a little because it is pricey, but so is just about everything on the island. Good food, intimate little spa, clean rooms and the best beach we have. Yes, there are fancier resorts on better beaches. Just not in this state. Talk a walk on the beach and relax.

Room Tip: If you are staying in one of the condos, go for second floor or higher. The beach view on ground fl...
