This house is a gem. We had a terrific guided tour. It has fantastic history connected to it. We had no idea but the daughter of the 1st owners married into the NY Roosevelt family & was the mother of President Theodore & the aunt of Eleanor Roosevelt. They had a civil war display in one of the rooms which connected to the sons of the family. Two of whom lived in exile in Liverpool UK, my husband's home city. They had displays of Liverpool too a Cotton importing port at that time. We had a fantastic visit.

I had the good fortune of touring this home during African American history month, and learning the tour to honor that month was told from the perspective of the slave families that lived here. It was impactful and informative, and I thought it was handled sensitively. This beautiful house is also interesting because it was one of the ancestral homes of the Presidents Roosevelt. There is also a charming children's tour. As others have noted, many furnishings are not original to the house, but are period.

I have toured this home numerous times for different functions. Well worth the price. A unique home with a wonderful history that everyone will appreciate. Beautiful in spring. Make sure you see the small gardens next door.

Compared to other cities with historical houses, this lacks in originality as when it was restored so many of the furniture was gone. However, it does give a sense of history and the type of life when the town was started. Gone is the original acreage which also gave more depth in tours that were first given in the 1975 era. It is especially nice for viewing when combined with the Smith Plantation and Barrington Hall just up the road a bit and when the horse and buggy and folks in costume are adding to the whole atmosphere.
