My husband and I stayed at this hotel during our cross-country trip from Orlando to Chicago. We arrived around 7 p.m. on a weeknight, left for dinner and some exploration in downtown Savannah and then returned for the evening late that night to watch t.v. and wind down before our day on the road.
First things first, my husband got his computer out to check email, our bank account, and so on. About five minutes after being in the room, a bug was buzzing around the room and a flying roach landed smack dab on his keyboard (he killed it, thank goodness). For some reason, he also noticed some spiders dangling from the ceiling. He took a shoe and killed about eight or so of them and noticed cobwebs all around the perimeter of the room lining the ceiling. While he was on his spider-killing hunt, he became aware of the black mold completely covering the wall behind the nightstand. At this point, it was about 10:45 p.m. We called hotels.com (who we had booked the hotel through) to complain about the condition of the hotel and our room; they offered some trip bucks to make up for the night which was great, but we still had to stay there. The next step that we took involved calling the Super 8 customer service 800 number to make them aware of the roaches, spiders and mold. We figured that other travelers should not have the same bad experience as us so we "filed a case" with a seven business day response time being guaranteed. Our phone rang 45 minutes later - it was the front desk and they demanded that we pack our bags and get out of the room. "You've got 10 minutes to get out of here. We can't handle this type of complaint," the front desk clerk said. Completely shocked at this type of treatment (who would have known that complaining about a problem that needs to be addressed could get you kicked out of a hotel?), my husband and I packed up all of our belongings at 11:30 p.m. and drove about 10 miles north across the Georgia border into South Carolina to a cleaner hotel with excellent customer service. We were refunded from Super 8 - and we understood in advance that it is not a five-star hotel - but we highly recommend steering clear of this place...unless you want to sleep with roaches, spiders and mold.
