As the reviewer of the report immediately before this one says, you have to know and enjoy old, historic places to fully appreciate a stay at the New Perry. The Johnson family is working very hard to redo an old and neglected property and they are making good strides in that direction. Every staff member was pleasant, helpful, and loved to chat about the work they are doing and the plans to continue the revitalizing of this old hotel and restaurant.
We stayed in the back motel section in the James Dean room. While older in style and decor (some items are just old, some actual antiques), it certainly gave us a good night's rest and was very clean. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in the restaurant and a drink in the Tavery, joining locals and visitors in watching and guessing answers to Teen Jeopardy, won that night by a 13 year old student from our home area.
The drink and beer menu choices were of a wider variety than anticipated in both pub and restaurant. There was a dinner theatre production going on in an adjoining room while we ate, attended by quite a few locals, but it did not disturb the flow of service for the 6 or so couples in the regular dining room. Dinner choices were for mostly for southern comfort food, but tasty and well prepared. The rolls were yummy, the raw veggies as an appetizer unexpected and healthy, and the celery soup delicious. Breakfast is available the next morning by order the night before so that the cook knows how many to expect.
Be sure to check on AARP and AAA discounts, but prices are very reasonable!
