“Nice place but.....”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

The property is well kept, clean and modern. Our room was lovely. The food in the restaurant was excellent but expensive. The staff were very good. Geraldine and Michael were good hosts. We really appreciated Geraldine booking rounds of golf for us in Killarney and Dingle. We thought that the following were issues: 1. We had to carry our luggage up a fairly long set of stairs. 2.The internet is very poor. Difficult to even download mail. 3.Our room *305 faced a country road and it was noisy as cars and trucks go flying by until late in the evening. 4 The pillows are very hard and uncomfortable. 5. The location is a bit out of the way. Overall we thought that it was a nice place and rate it "very good" as the hosts and staff were excellent.

Hi Beth and thank you very much for your review, which we truly appreciate - even though we hate to see any review headline ending in "BUT".......

We're delighted that overall you say that ours is a 'nice place' and 'very good' This tells us that we delivered on the promise we made to you at booking, which is the most important thing of all to us

Regarding the five issues you raise, I want to very quickly comment on each of them, so readers of this review might not be left with a wrong impression of the Killeen House

1. Carrying your luggage..... We are a three star Hotel and do not have full time portering staff. But two of our four front of house staff (Gavin and Damien) always carry guest luggage to the rooms when they are on duty. The girls (Ciara and Karen) do not usually do this, but if guests are clearly incapacitated or elderly, they will do so, or else ask one of our Kitchen staff to do it. I (that's me, Michael) unfortunately cannot carry guest luggage this year, because of a medical situation I currently have. On the issue of the long set of stairs, Beth I really don't think eleven steps is all that long.....?

2. Poor internet...... We're in rural Ireland and we currently have the very best wifi (throughout the whole Hotel) that is available in this area. Sometimes it is very slow - more times it's instant! Either way, we provide this service to our guests on a complimentary basis - but cannot guarantee it will be as fast as they would like it to be (or we would like it to be for that matter!)

3. Noisy rooms. Yes, some of our rooms face on a small country road, but thankfully I have to say that we extremely rarely ever have noise problems with this road. But obviously I am really sorry if this was an issue for you Had you alerted us to this problem while you were with us, one very simple room move would have sorted it out on the spot

4. Pillows...... Hard or soft....which is most comfortable? Depends clearly on who you're asking! This is why we have a range of them on hand here in the Killeen House. We do tend mostly to have foam ones in the rooms, because it seems to us that less guests are allergic to these than are allergic to our goose feather ones. As with the above point though, I have to say that one comment to any of our staff on this, would have solved the problem instantly!

5. Location.... The Killeen House in one form or another has stood on on it's present site since 1838! You call it "out of the way", we choose to call it "ideally located in the beautiful Irish countryside"...!

I just wanted to respond to your points Beth and again I want to thank you for the overall excellent review

I hope the rest of your Irish vacation went of well and that you landed safely home to Switzerland. All the best to you both. Michael & Geraldine

Killeen House is a lovely traditional hotel and it is very clear that everyone tries their hardest, and indeed succeeds, in making you welcome and ensuring you have the happiest of stays. For us, Gavin gets particular praise - I wish he worked for me because he excelled in going the extra mile. As a professionally trained cook, we chose Killeen House because of its reputation in the area for food and we were not disappointed. Our championship bedroom was spacious and a very well appointed room for 3 (there were 2 of us) but my mistake was in not specifically requesting a king size bed - we were so pleased with the general standard of the room that unfortunately didn't realise the size of the bed until we were actually in it as I am sure that they would have done their very best to accommodate this request.

Room Tip: If you want a king size bed, request it specifically as some of the championship rooms we saw had a...

Hi and thank you very much for the excellent review - we really appreciate it

We're delighted you had a good time with us here in the Killeen House and that you enjoyed the quality of our food and the friendliness of our staff.

And our problem for the next few days will be keeping Gavin's feet on the ground after your very kind comments about him!

Thanks again and you know where we are if and when you come to the Kingdom of Kerry at some future time. Michael & Geraldine

I can't say enough about the wonderful experience that my wife had I had on a recent 3 night stay at the Killeen House. Everything was super - the owners, Michael and Geraldine went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, the accommodations were outstanding and the restaurant was excellent. We especially enjoyed the golf-themed pub and the ability to DIY behind the bar. I feel that the Killeen House combines the ambience and personal attention of a B and B with the amenities and location of a 5 star hotel. It was certainly the best of the several places that we stayed on this trip and we hope to return in the near future.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review which we truly appreciate your taking the time to write and post on Trip Advisor

Delighted you enjoyed the stay with us and we are especially thankful to you for highlighting what we consider to be the real appeal of our little property, which is the kind of crossover we are between B&B and Hotel, and where we try and combine the best of both these worlds

I hope the rest of your Irish vacation went off well and that you have now landed safely home in the USA with loads of happy Irish memories!

Thank you so much again and all the best. Michael & Geraldine

This was our favorite B&B in Ireland! It has a wonderfully homey, comfortable feel. We were checked in by the owner, Mike, who took great pains to know each of our names and welcome us. He and his wife, Geraldine, were the most gracious hosts you could hope for. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and more than met our needs. The restaurant was absolutely superb, as was the service. It was a great surprise that both Mike & Geraldine remembered and referred to us by name daily and continuously checked on us to see that we were comfortable. I highly recommend this B&B if you are in the Kilarney area.

One word....spectacular! This was our first trip to Ireland. I cannot say enough words about the hospitality of this place. It was a true highlight and hands down the nicest place we stayed throughout our 12-day vacation in Ireland. Damien welcomed us in, helped us with our bags, and while we are fit and able to lug our own bags, he insisted, stating, "That's not your problem. Relax. You're on holiday." Well, that set the tone for our wonderful and ultimately too short 3-day stay at Killeen House. The House is on the Aghadoe mountain with a great overlook of the countryside. Geraldine and Michael Rosney are gems of people and know how to make guests feel relaxed and welcome. But, it comes naturally to them. Our breakfasts were fantastic....so many choices and all delicious. While we planned on dinners outside of our accommodations for almost all of our trip, we made it a point to have dinner at Killeen, and we were not disappointed. Rack of Kerry lamb for me and wine for the two of us. An elegant night out. Our other wonderful staff included Cian and Gavin, all of whom at various times handled our needs. The pub is awesome and a great place to meet with other guests over a pint. All in all, we'll be back. It's totally worth it. Thanks, Michael and Geraldine. Hope to see you again, folks. The Hoyers

Hi guys and thank you so much for the sparkling review (got the pictures too!) here on Trip Advisor - we are indebted to you for going to all the time and trouble of posting it up

We're glad that you enjoyed everything here in the Killeen House - especially the lamb, which is our top selling and most favoured dish at the moment

It was a pleasure to look after you both and one that we hope we may even get to have again if time and circumstance brings you back to Killarney

In the meantime thank you again and all the very best of everything to both of you. Michael & Geraldine

This hotel was a real find!
We arrived in Killarney ...Friday circa 5pm having driven from Dublin. It was wet, windy and grey. The journey past Limerick through Adare and Newcastle West was slow and tedious due to the volume of traffic travelling to take part in the Ring of Kerry Cycle. Even as we approached Killarney the tail back of traffic was soooo long.
Then we took a right turn. Direction Aghadoe. A quiet country road meandered unhindered toward our destination. The Killeen House Hotel. Another right turn through the gates and we were 'home'.
Met at the door by Gavin, with a big smile and offer of a cup of tea in the sitting room with its quaint windows, modern tv and internet access the trials of the journey faded and when we were ensconced in our room they melted away altogether.
Our journey into the town of Killarney later that evening to register for the cycle further reinforced our delight in having found a haven of peace ...and parking without hassle. The combination of the crowds, the rain, the tailbacks, the difficulty in finding parking, all contributed to a sense of hassle. The location of Killeen House Hotel avoided all that.
On our visit to the restaurant that evening we were introduced to our hosts Geraldine and Michael. Geraldine, glamorous, efficient and so attentive ensured the carbohydrate requirements pre cycle were met while also catering for my smaller appetite with tastefully cooked fresh fish. Michael manned the bar...which unfortunately due to an early start on the cycle we could not fully appreciate...but some of our fellow residents...from foreign climes... regaled us with the generosity of his hospitality.
Breakfast times on Saturday were rearranged to cater for those cyclists leaving from 6am and our waitress, whose name unfortunately I failed to register, showed no signs of being called from her bed two hours earlier than usual. When I returned to finish my breakfast in leisure, having waved my beloved farewell on his trip around the Ring, she helpfully suggested Rossbeigh Beach for me to walk. Despite the soft weather it was enriching for the soul!
Later, while awaiting... with my camera...in the pagoda on the lawn, the return of my beloved from his cycle I was sustained with tea by the ever attentive Damien. It was so peaceful.
Needless to say, Saturday night in celebration we visited the bar and our dinner was again superb. I leave the rest to your imagination!! We'll be going back and not just for the cycle!!
We hope to meet you there.

Room Tip: Our room on the ground floor had a double and single bed. It was roomy, clean and brightly furnished...

We just returned from a two week trip to southern Ireland. Our stay at the Killeen House was one of the best parts of the trip. From the moment Damon opened the door offering the warmest and friendliest service we experienced to the delicious dinner we were served we were in heaven. Michael and Geraldine made our stay memorable and arranged for our escorted drive around the ring of Kerry. The hotel is in a beautiful local and it is a beautiful place itself, inside and out. We have already referred a couple from NY who are staying there in the fall and we are in fact planning to go back for a longer stay. Thank you Killeen House! Maureen
