“The Best Choice in Nyungwe”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

I can't give enough positive reviews on this place. Upon our arrival to the hotel, Ellen, the receptionist, greeted us with a hot washcloth to clean our hands and face from the long trip. She invited us to sit down and then after some time to relax brought us our "welcome drink"- hot tea from the local tea plantations. She then checked us in and gave us a tour of our little villa. As it is a bit cooler in Nyungwe, there is a fireplace in each of the villas which the staff will light for you whenever you request it. After returning from a particularly rainy hike, staff members lit our fire so that we could warm up and dry our clothes. They delivered Mützig to our room and were nothing but warm, kind, and inviting. At night, they will warm your bed and pillows with hot water bottles, too.

The hotel is very isolated, so you have to understand and accept that going in. If you're planning on lounging around and watching TV/playing on your computer all day, then this hotel is NOT for you. That being said, I'm not sure why you would want to have that kind of experience in Nyungwe. This is one of the most beautiful spots in Rwanda, and the hotel provides you with a great location and absolutely breathtaking views. This hotel is the absolutely perfect place to go, relax, and really enjoy the scenery. The only reason to pay twice what you would pay here and stay at the Lodge (the only other real option in Nyungwe) is if you want TV/internet/a swimming pool. Why you would want that kind of distraction in this incredible place? The service here is exceptional and I wouldn't have wanted anything different in my stay.

Before going, I was a bit hesitant about the Top View Hotel because of some of the reviews-- especially about the food. But I'm writing to tell you that they must have responded positively to some of that criticism because I have zero complaints about anything I ate at the hotel. They provide various options for each meal, and I found everything I ate to be delicious. They will serve you breakfast as early as you request (very helpful for some of those early chimp treks). We had fried eggs, toast, and bananas for breakfast and I felt very energized and full for our hike. We took a bagged lunch each day for our hikes and the ham & cheese sandwich was great, served with chips and fruit if you request it. The dinners were always delicious (I had a pork chop, rice, and soup one night and it was excellent).

Thanks to the Top View Hotel, Nyungwe was a real highlight of my trip.

We had a fantastic time staying in this gorgeous location. Sue- Ellen was there to help with any requests and greet you with humor and a warm welcome. we loved our cottage, very clean and quiet. lovely to have a fire lit on Christmas day and hot bottles. we had a large bedroom, a clean bathroom with a bathtub and a shower, a cosy living room and a large private balcony.
Unfortunately, the dinner was really not satisfactory, we are vegetarian and choice was very limited, also it was freezing cold on the second night. (pudding was actually lovely every night though) the one thing I would have added to the room was tea making facilities, apart from that it was a wonderful stay.

Great views, very nice lodges, plenty of bird life, pleasant staff...these are the positives.
We stayed just for one night on the way back from Kigali to Kamembe. Checking in was easy and all of the staff were very helpful. The room was lovely and the bathroom particularly pleasant. A nice touch was that staff lit a fire in the sitting room of our lodge.
Not so good was the food. There was little choice and the evening meal was a buffet style meal that was not really up to the standard I would expect from a hotel charging as much as Top View.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Forest.

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel on our honeymoon and had a very nice time.
The cottages are clean and spacious with a sitting room with fireplace (it was really cold and we were happy to have a fireplace in the evening). For breakfast we used to have coffee and a lunch pack. Dinner was good, especially the buffet.
The road to the hotel was under construction and quite an adventure (we were on a self-driving-tour).
The staff was wonderful and especially Baptiste fulfilled all our wishes. THANK YOU ALL

Room Tip: We had the last cottage on the left. A great choice with a wonderful view and very quiet.

We arrived in the dark after a REALLY long drive, feeling a bit fed up! It isn't exactly prepossessing in the dark, but wait till morning and you will see why this place is so popular. The views are great - and you are minutes from where you can go trekking to see the Chimps. The rooms are more like little apartments with a living room with fireplace (cheered us up a lot on our arrival!). Make sure the pump is on if you're wanting a shower! The staff are BRILLIANT - very passionate about Rwanda and very passionate about their hotel. The food is good - limited choices but tastes great. Drink the local beer rather than imported stuff which is much more expensive! I really hope this place continues to do well as it so deserves to.

The views here are breathtaking, looking over the hills of rural Rwanda. Staff is very hard working and entertaining to watch. Food was fine and rooms clean and spacious. Big king sized bed which was nice. Rooms have great views and a balcony. No wifi and location a bit isolated but otherwise a great choice!

Nyungwe Top View Hill hotel is located on a hill near the town of Gisakura. The main building is circular shaped with terraces 360 degrees round with magnificent views, where breakfast and diner is served. The 10 standalone cottages are big and nice equiped: sleeping room, bathroom, balcony with nice view and ensuite with a fire place! Everynight the fire is lightened. There is a basic, tasteful daily menu for lunch and diner with good quality and hopefully the menu is updated and extended later on. Service is not perfect yet, but the staff works hard.
