I can't give enough positive reviews on this place. Upon our arrival to the hotel, Ellen, the receptionist, greeted us with a hot washcloth to clean our hands and face from the long trip. She invited us to sit down and then after some time to relax brought us our "welcome drink"- hot tea from the local tea plantations. She then checked us in and gave us a tour of our little villa. As it is a bit cooler in Nyungwe, there is a fireplace in each of the villas which the staff will light for you whenever you request it. After returning from a particularly rainy hike, staff members lit our fire so that we could warm up and dry our clothes. They delivered Mützig to our room and were nothing but warm, kind, and inviting. At night, they will warm your bed and pillows with hot water bottles, too.
The hotel is very isolated, so you have to understand and accept that going in. If you're planning on lounging around and watching TV/playing on your computer all day, then this hotel is NOT for you. That being said, I'm not sure why you would want to have that kind of experience in Nyungwe. This is one of the most beautiful spots in Rwanda, and the hotel provides you with a great location and absolutely breathtaking views. This hotel is the absolutely perfect place to go, relax, and really enjoy the scenery. The only reason to pay twice what you would pay here and stay at the Lodge (the only other real option in Nyungwe) is if you want TV/internet/a swimming pool. Why you would want that kind of distraction in this incredible place? The service here is exceptional and I wouldn't have wanted anything different in my stay.
Before going, I was a bit hesitant about the Top View Hotel because of some of the reviews-- especially about the food. But I'm writing to tell you that they must have responded positively to some of that criticism because I have zero complaints about anything I ate at the hotel. They provide various options for each meal, and I found everything I ate to be delicious. They will serve you breakfast as early as you request (very helpful for some of those early chimp treks). We had fried eggs, toast, and bananas for breakfast and I felt very energized and full for our hike. We took a bagged lunch each day for our hikes and the ham & cheese sandwich was great, served with chips and fruit if you request it. The dinners were always delicious (I had a pork chop, rice, and soup one night and it was excellent).
Thanks to the Top View Hotel, Nyungwe was a real highlight of my trip.
