Owner description: Hills & Dales Estate is the historic home and garden of textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway. Located in LaGrange, Georgia. The centerpiece of the estate is a beautiful Georgian-Italian style home built in 1916. Designed by the noted architectural firm of Hentz & Reid it is one of the finest homes built toward the end of the country house era. The home was occupied by two generations of the Callaway family and contains all of the families' original furnishings. Formal gardens surrounding the home and were created by the original owner of the property, Sarah Coleman Ferrell prior to the Civil War. Within the gardens visitors will see many of Sarah's religiously inspired planting including a large planting of the word "God" and her personal motto "God is Love." The extensive formal boxwood garden also feature an herb garden, greenhouse, fountains and garden sculpture. The 35-acre estate, complemented by a Visitor Center containing family artifacts and displays, opened to the public in 2004. In May of 2010 twenty additional rooms on the second and third floor of the home opened for tours.

The house was very accessible with original furniture and a guide who was very well versed in the history of the estate. The house was built in 1916 but with many modern concepts.(Electricity, water, fire protection, ventilation). The gardens were well kept and the history behind them is a must to understand. That detail is provided by a video prior to the tour that is a must see. Allow 3 hours for a casual visit.

Went with my elderly mother and aunt. My aunt said she liked it better than "Biltmore" but thankfully it is smaller! Great tour guide who will tell you more or less depending on how much time you have. Must be able to climb stairs to see it all.

This far exceeded our expectations. We have toured houses and gardens from Monticello to San Simeon. We enjoyed this as much as any other. We stayed at Callaway Gardens, but this was well worth the side trip. Take your time and enjoy the details.

Worth the visit to Lagrange. The historic Callaway familly home tour and the 35 acres of beautiful gardens are a wonderful attraction. Built by the original Callaway and lovingly maintained. We had a private house tour with a very knowledgeable guide on a weekday.
Stop on your way to nearby Callaway Gardens.

You will not be disappointed with a visit to Hills and Dales. The home tour is very well done, as is the entire experience. Very freindly and knowledgable staff. The gardens are beautiful. Take the time and spend a few hours. Take the time to learn about the history. The Calloways were a humble and hard working family. Some great life lessons here about how working hard and caring about people can lead to great success.
