What a great thing the state of Georgia as preserved this area on Jekyll Island. The old homes or cottages as they called them are amazing. The tour includes admission to 2 of the homes where there is a guide plus there is a comentary by the guide on the trolley. Everything is kept up and the grounds are beautiful. There are just two trolley tours a day, at 11 and 1. The rich and famous came in the winter to get away from the weather in New York. You could close your eyes and see the Astors, Vanderbilts and Rockerfellers heading to the club to eat since none of the cottages had kitchens! The club itself is a hotel and you can wander around the grounds and lobby. If you are just driving the coast or staying in the area this is a fantastic spot.

The grounds are maintained so beautifully with different flowers
and it's a very clean area to walk about.

The Jekyll Island Club on Jekyll Island was founded in the late 1800s as a place for some of the wealthiest Americans to hang out, bond, fish, hunt, strategize and (I suspect) collude. The Federal Reserve System was engineered here, and the first transcontinental telephone call originated from here. It survived until 1942, when the War and financial problems caused it to close its doors (and its spectacular "cottages"). Now a national historic site, the main building serves as a first class hotel for today's affluent. The grounds are beautiful, and bike paths traverse most of the seven- mile island. Three golf courses are associated with the hotel, as is an ocean-front pavilion for the beach-going guests. The Club and adjacent Historical District are well worth the15-minute drive off I95, even if you are just curious about the lifestyles of the Rockefellers, Morgans, Vanderbilts, Goodyears, etc.

I love the whole island, especially the historic district. It is like going back in time. Such southern elegance.

The architecture wraps you in an earlier time. We recommend strolling through the historic district at different times of the day. The evenings are particularly magical as lights high in the ancient tree limbs give an ambiance unbelieveable.
